Heavily focused on Stephen Tong's take on it and Deuteronomy 12:4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So this morning, Nadia spoke with me about not leading E. on in the praise team which I've played violin for quite some time now, if I don't like the CCM, which is the only style we use. That is, I should tell her that I am quitting the team. Though we have a mix of traditional hymns (which I think is favored by the pastor in spite of his insistence as if there's no difference between hymns and CCM), the team I'm on that play between the first hymn and the offering always use CCM. I definitely am not signed up for CCM. Once a while it's okay, but not fully committed to CCM. So I talked to E. on the phone and then we emailed back and forth about it. We did our best to be civil with each other. I wouldn't allow her to change the style just on my account if she didn't get my point. Which she didn't. I doubt it, based on the email conversations. If I pushed any further, she would flip the fundamentalist switch: \"It's the heart that counts\", \"Best song is in Heaven\" to evade the topic in question. <strong>On the side note, I think one major problem with churches these days is the lack of fellowship time to talk about these face to face<\/strong>. If this is not done well, fellowships become superficial. If the pastor were to talk to me about this, as she suggested he might, I certainly welcome it. May God grant me wisdom and grace in this should it happen. Even so, the more grace if he were to just use the authority of the pulpit to misrepresent my point and attack the strawman in public. Of course, there is something to reflect upon: A wiser advice would be to not go into this in haste. Don't just join a team just because you know how to play violin and it is a church. Wait, watch, observe patiently to see what direction they are heading first. Now let's remind ourselves that E. is one who loved the movie Jesus Revolution, and possibly the recent Asbury Revival as well. As this is the Charismatic+Evangelical style activity popular from the 80s to 90s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would also add in comment a good site on Stephen Tong's take on this: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rectp.org\/2012\/11\/blog-post_26.html\" target=\"_blank\">\u5510\u5d07\u69ae\u7267\u5e2b\u8ad6\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u97f3\u6a02<\/a>. I shall also post its content all the way in the bottom in case the link goes broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She didn't like it when I attributed CCM to Charismatic, as she would rather use Evangelical instead. Which made me conclude a good <strong>definition for the Charismatics: Replacing true substance with that which is superficial.<\/strong> I don't define it as many would: Speaking in tongue, loves to perform miracles, always receiving visions, etc. My definition covers all of those already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such is the case also with CCM. The lyrics look good, Christ centered, reformed, etc. But Music is not just about the lyrics, it's the composition, the melody (how catchy, attractive, etc.), the rhythms (how stable, not too much syncopations), the connection between the words and music, where is the climax, why the use of rounds, certain instruments, etc. Of course, I am not  saying ALL CCM are just as bad as each other. There are good ones, such as Keith Getty's In Christ Alone. <strong>However, what's more important to note is that CCM is not equally ranked qualitatively as hymns (traditional, sacred)<\/strong>. With E. I realized that I even had to explain that when I said hymns, I wasn't including hymnody remade in contemporary musical style. That is just CCM, not hymns. Of course, if you want to call these CCM hymns, then I would have to emphasize the hymns I am referring to are traditional hymns, not CCM hymns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The reason traditional hymns are better is because they have stood the test of time.<\/strong> Bad \"hymns\" were long discarded, forgotten, due to poor quality, lacking that eternity quality. However, CCM by the very definition just means not tested by time yet. Those who are musically sensitive could tell good or bad right away, but for the rest of us, we could only wait patiently to see, should we still be alive, if some of these CCM would become traditional hymns years later. Because of this, traditional hymns are always safer, while CCM is risky. Therefore, this is key:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is <strong>nothing wrong with mixing the two<\/strong>: traditional and CCM in church services despite running the risk of picking a low quality\/shallow CCM.<br>There is <strong>certainly nothing wrong with just using traditional<\/strong> hymns.<br>There is however <strong>something wrong with just using CCM<\/strong> and not traditional hymns.<br>There is also however <strong>something wrong with using traditional hymns simply because of tradition, familiarity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I find it hard to find a good lecture on the topic of Christianity and Music\/Art in the West that's done deeply. If any, it's a very shallow take on the subject: it's just the lyrics, number of Bible verses used, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional hymns are now being used by the Mormons. Everytime I look up some hymns in YouTube, the Mormon Tabernacle is the one that usually comes out first. We may call them stealing our heritage, but they would think they are the same as us. When I realized this a while back, I got suspicious enough to think \"No, they couldn't have taken all good Christian hymns, what about the hymns on Trinity, particularly: Holy Holy Holy\". Sure enough, they took that one too. <strong>\"But then, how are they going to sing: God in Three Persons, Blessed Trinity!\" I cracked laughing as I found out they changed that line to \"God in Thine glory, through eternity\".<\/strong> So at least the non-Christians could see the qualitative value in our traditional hymns, music-wise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I then went back to check on a couple of songs by CityAlight, a band that E. loved. I re-examined the song: <strong>Yet Not I But Through Christ in Me<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CityAlight - Yet Not I But Through Christ In Me (Live)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hwc2d1Xt8gM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>true enough, I immediately found a few problem. Lyric-wise, nothing too bad. <strong>However, the climax of the music is not the title or God centered, it's focusing more on the self as the refrains climax to: \"All is mine!\", \"I shall overcome!\", \"I am free!\" despite followed by \"yet not I but through Christ in me\" in descending melody and decrescendo.<\/strong> The <strong>drone style background<\/strong> music sounded like trying to <strong>hypnotize <\/strong>people, the visual setting (I supposed this is the original intent since the video is made directly by the authors) is <strong>like in a night club<\/strong>. The whole musical theme sounded like someone struggling with drug addiction or something. Maybe it's still a good song for new converts who got out of drug addiction, but as a congregational worship song? Not quite apt. The other music have similar taste. Not all are bad, their \"The Night Song\" seems much better since it's very clearly something you sing for people afraid of living in darkness. The Night Song's composer\/author is also slightly different: Colin Buchanan. So I looked up one of Yet Not I But Through Christ in Me's composer: Michael Farren to check out the differences. True enough, Farren's musics are a bit unstable. <strong>Music is more than just the lyrics, it's how and where you emphasize words sung in your composition.<\/strong> The connection must be a healthy one, as Tong would put it. The examples of criteria one can use to examine a piece are plenty and can also be simple. For example, on dynamics, emphasis on which words or phrases matters. The same text can be said\/sung in a God centered manner or it could also be done in a man centered manner. \"I will always<strong> PRAISE THEE!!!<\/strong> (God centered) vs. <strong>IIIIII... will always<\/strong> praise Thee (man centered)\", \"All I want is to serve the <strong>Almighty King<\/strong> vs. <strong>All I want<\/strong> is to serve the lmighty King.\" Now in this case, man centeredness is not necessarily bad, can be bad, but not necessarily. It can simply be an emphasis on man, the self, in the struggle against evil, emphasizing God's comfort to man, God's love FOR man. But perhaps when it is not God centered, it may better be sung privately, in which case, it behooves us note the importance of attending church, in a service where the combined fellowship of men points back to God in an emphasis of greater effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, I certainly would try to discern the borders from objective to subjective standards in CCM. When it's subjective, it cultural, it's not something I want to make a big deal out of. Some culture has jazz, some has country, etc. But regardless, the basic principles still apply, regardless of style. You don't use country song with something solemn, you don't use jazz for many, I don't even see many jazz style would work without becoming entertaining instead of worship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rectp.org\/2012\/11\/blog-post_26.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u5510\u5d07\u69ae\u7267\u5e2b\u8ad6\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u97f3\u6a02<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u7b2c\u56db\u5ea6\u7a7a\u9593\u6642\u9593\u7684\u85dd\u8853<\/strong>\uff0d\uff0d\u5510\u5d07\u69ae\u7267\u5e2b\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u97f3\u6a02\u5c08\u984c\u8b1b\u5ea7<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u4f60\u5011\u5728\u9019\u88e1\u805a\u6703\u7684\u6642\u5019\u89ba\u5f97\u6bd4\u5e73\u5e38\u8212\u670d\u4e00\u9ede\uff0c\u662f\u55ce\uff1f\u662f\u51b7\u6c23\u5920\u51b7\u55ce\uff1f\u4e0d\u662f\u3002\u53ea\u56e0\u70ba\u5f88\u591a\u6703\u5531\u6b4c\u7684\u4eba\u5728\u9019\u88e1\u3002\u4f60\u5011\u505a\u79ae\u62dc\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u5f88\u591a\u4eba\u90fd\u662f\u4e82\u5531\u4e00\u5834\u3002\u4f60\u5011\u4e00\u908a\u505a\u79ae\u62dc\uff0c\u4e00\u908a\u80cc\u5341\u5b57\u67b6\u3002\u5728\u9019\u88e1\u805a\u6703\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u524d\u5f8c\u5de6\u53f3\u90fd\u662f\u6703\u5531\u6b4c\u7684\u4eba\uff1b\u6240\u4ee5\u5fc3\u88e1\u611f\u5230\u5f88\u5feb\u6a02\u3002\u4f46\u9019\u7b97\u4e0d\u5f97\u751a\u9ebc\u3002\u4ee5\u5f8c\u6211\u5011\u5230\u5929\u4e0a\u53bb\uff0c\u6240\u6709\u5929\u4f7f\u90fd\u5728\u5531\uff0c\u4f60\u624d\u77e5\u9053\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u7684\u97f3\u6a02\u53ef\u4ee5\u7f8e\u5230\u90a3\u4e00\u500b\u5730\u6b65\u3002\u963f\u5011\uff1f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u4f46\u4eca\u5929\u5f88\u53ef\u60dc\u5728\u6559\u6703\u88e1\u9762\u9818\u8a69\u7684\uff0c\u5f48\u7434\u7684\u548c\u4e3b\u6301\u97f3\u6a02\u7684\u4eba\u90fd\u662f\u4e0d\u61c2\u97f3\u6a02\u7684\u4eba\u3002\u7279\u5225\u662f\u9078\u8a69\u6b4c\u7684\u4eba\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u7528\u5dff\u5834\u5c0e\u5411\u7684\u6280\u8853\uff0c\u628a\u90a3\u4e9b\u5927\u773e\u6bd4\u8f03\u559c\u6b61\u7684\u6b4c\u4ee3\u66ff\u4e86\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u5049\u5927\u7684\u8056\u6a02\uff1b\u7136\u5f8c\u628a\u6559\u6703\u6b77\u53f2\u4e2d\u9593\uff0c\u795e\u8cdc\u7d66\u7942\u5152\u5973\u7684\uff0c\u4e16\u754c\u6700\u5049\u5927\u7684\u97f3\u6a02\u653e\u9032\u5009\u5eab\u88e1\u9762\u3002\u9019\u4e8c\u5341\u5e74\u4f86\u5f88\u591a\u5049\u5927\u7684\u8056\u8a69\uff0c\u5df2\u7d93\u5f9e\u6559\u6703\u88e1\u6d88\u5931\u4e86\u3002\u628a\u90a3\u4e9b\u721b\u97f3\u6a02\u653e\u9032\u4f86\uff0c\u52a0\u4e0a\u597d\u4e9b\u7bc0\u594f\uff0c\u9084\u4ee5\u70ba\u9019\u4e9b\u662f\u8056\u9748\u7684\u5de5\u4f5c\uff0c\u6559\u6703\u5fa9\u8208\u4e86\uff0c\u9f13\u4e5f\u62ff\u904e\u4f86\u4e86\uff0c\u628a\u96fb\u5b50\u7434\u7684\u8072\u97f3\u653e\u5927\u5e7e\u5341\u500d\uff0c\u7528\u7bc0\u594f\u4f86\u4ee3\u66ff\u5049\u5927\u7684\u65cb\u5f8b\uff0c\u5f88\u591a\u4eba\u5c31\u4ee5\u70ba\u7cbe\u795e\u632f\u596e\u8d77\u4f86\u4e86\u3002\u4ed6\u5011\u7528\u5e7e\u5343Watt\u7684\u96fb\u6d41\u628a\u8072\u97f3\u64ad\u51fa\u4f86\uff0c\u5c31\u8a8d\u70ba\u662f\u795e\u7684\u5de5\u4f5c\u4e86\uff1b\u5ffd\u7136\u9593\uff0c\u96fb\u6d41\u505c\u4e86\uff0c\u8056\u9748\u8dd1\u6389\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u4f60\u6703\u8aaa\uff1a\u300cMessiah\u51fa\u4f86\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u6559\u6703\u4e5f\u4e0d\u63a5\u53d7\u554a\u3002\u5f8c\u4f86\u4e0d\u662f\u63a5\u53d7\u4e86\u55ce\uff1f\u9019\u4e9b\u90fd\u662f\u76f8\u5c0d\u7684\uff0c\u4e0d\u5fc5\u8a08\u8f03\u3002\u300d\u9019\u500b\u6211\u4e0d\u63a5\u53d7\u3002\u597d\u7684\u6771\u897f\uff0c\u6108\u820a\u6108\u597d\u3002\u58de\u7684\u6771\u897f\uff0c\u958b\u59cb\u5f88\u597d\uff0c\u4f46\u7d93\u4e0d\u8d77\u8003\u9a57\u3002\u6240\u4ee5\uff0c\u4f60\u8981\u611f\u8b1d\u795e\u4e16\u754c\u4e0a\u6c92\u6709\u4e00\u7a2e\u5b97\u6559\u6703\u7522\u751f\u50cf\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u90a3\u9ebc\u5049\u5927\u7684\u97f3\u6a02\u3002\u70ba\u751a\u9ebc\u5462\uff1f\u56e0\u70ba\u57fa\u7763\u6559\u4fe1\u4ef0\u7684\u672c\u8cea\uff0c\u6700\u9ad8\u7684\u50f9\u503c\uff0c\u653e\u5728\u90a3\u88e1\uff1f\u662f\u6069\u5178\u7684\u56de\u61c9\u7522\u751f\u4e86\u4fe1\u4ef0\u7684\u8868\u9054\uff0c\u7522\u751f\u4e86\u6280\u8853\u7684\u8868\u9054\uff0c\u4e5f\u7522\u751f\u4e86\u5d07\u62dc\u7684\u8868\u9054\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u5176\u4ed6\u7684\u5b97\u6559\u4fe1\u4ef0\u4e0d\u53ef\u80fd\u9019\u6a23\u7684\u3002\u5982\u679c\u6211\u5011\u57fa\u7763\u5f92\u81ea\u5df1\u4e5f\u6c92\u6709\u6559\u5c0e\u9019\u4e9b\u9053\u7406\u7684\u8a71\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u5c31\u662f\u51fa\u8ce3\u4e86\u9577\u5b50\u7684\u540d\u4efd\u3002\u4f60\u5011\u9019\u4e9b\u7267\u5e2b\u96a8\u4fbf\u63db\u97f3\u6a02\u4f86\u4ee3\u66ff\u5049\u5927\u8056\u6a02\u7684\uff0c\u5c07\u4f86\u5728\u795e\u9762\u524d\u8ca0\u8cac\u4efb\u3002\u505a\u9577\u8001\u7684\uff0c\u76fc\u671b\u66f4\u591a\u4eba\u4f86\uff0c\u5c31\u628a\u597d\u7684\u97f3\u6a02\u4e1f\u6389\uff0c\u628a\u58de\u7684\u97f3\u6a02\u62ff\u9032\u4f86\uff0c\u4f60\u5011\u8981\u5728\u4e0a\u5e1d\u9762\u524d\u8ca0\u8cac\u4efb\u3002\u8a69\u73ed\u7684\u6307\u63ee\uff0c\u53f8\u7434\uff0c\u4e82\u6307\u4e82\u5f48\u7684\uff0c \u8981\u53d7\u5be9\u5224\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u6709\u4e9b\u79ae\u62dc\u5802\u5531\u8a69\u6bcf\u4e00\u9996\u6b4c\u90fd\u5531\u5f97\u5f88\u4f4e\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u5f48\u7434\u7684\u53ea\u61c2\u5f97\u5f48C\u8abf\u8ddfF\u8abf\u3002\u6709\u751a\u9ebc\u8cc7\u683c\u4e00\u500b\u4eba\u53eb\u5168\u6559\u6703\u8ddf\u4ed6\u4e0d\u6703\u5f48\u7684\u4f86\u964d\u4f4e\u8072\u97f3\uff1f\u4f5c\u66f2\u5bb6\u628a\u4e00\u9996\u6b4c\u8a2d\u5b9a\u5728\u90a3\u4e00\u500b\u8abf\u5b50\u4e0a\u662f\u7d93\u904e\u6df1\u601d\u719f\u616e\u7684\uff0c\u662f\u6df1\u6df1\u4e86\u89e3\u8072\u97f3\u7684\u97f3\u8cea\uff0c\u4e5f\u6839\u64da\u8a69\u6b4c\u7684\u672c\u8cea\u4f86\u6c7a\u5b9a\u97f3\u6a02\u85dd\u8853\u7684\u8868\u9054\u3002\u82e5\u662f\u4ed6\u7528B Flat\u5beb\u51fa\u4f86\uff0c\u4f60\u7528B
