When I<br \/>\nrefer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans.<br \/>\nSome of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized<br \/>\nAmericans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an<br \/>\nAmerican at all... The one absolutely certain way of bringing this<br \/>\nnation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a<br \/>\nnation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling<br \/>\nnationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans,<br \/>\nEnglish-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or<br \/>\nItalian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at<br \/>\nheart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than<br \/>\nwith the other citizens of the American Republic... There is no such<br \/>\nthing as a hyphenated American who is a good American.
