{"id":18333,"date":"2025-06-20T15:12:32","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T19:12:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nycphantom.com\/journal\/?p=18333"},"modified":"2025-06-20T15:34:44","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T19:34:44","slug":"biblical-fear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/nycphantom.com\/journal\/?p=18333","title":{"rendered":"Biblical Fear"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In the Bible, <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">the Hebrew<\/span><\/strong> has vague distinct vocabulary for the word fear:<br><strong>\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05d4 <\/strong>(yirah, H3374, also yare H3372 H3373, mostly <strong>positively<\/strong>, for reverence)<br><strong>\u05e4\u05bc\u05d7\u05d3 <\/strong>(pachad, H6343, also H6342, mostly <strong>negatively<\/strong>, for dread, terror)<br><strong>\u05de\u05d5\u05e8\u05d4 <\/strong>(mora, H4172, mostly <strong>negatively<\/strong>, for dread, terror)<br>It seems for the Hebrew, though they have at least 3 terms for fear, they do interchange them sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In Greek<\/span><\/strong>, we have about at least 3 but more distinct meaning terminologies:<br><strong>\u03b5\u03c5\u0313\u03bb\u03b1\u0301\u03b2\u03b5\u03b9\u03b1 <\/strong>(eulabeia, G2124, <strong>good <\/strong>reverence, twice: Heb 12:28, Heb 5:7), \u03b5\u03c5\u0313\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b5\u0301\u03bf\u03bc\u03b1\u03b9 (eulabeomai, G2125, thrice: Heb 11:7, Act 23:10, Heb 11:7), \u03b5\u03c5\u0313\u03bb\u03b1\u03b2\u03b7\u0301\u03c2 (eulabes, G2126, thrice: Luk 2:25, Act 2:5, Act 8:2) Also note that in Koine Greek (from Alexander the Great 336-323 BC), <strong>\u03b5\u03c5\u0313<\/strong> is pronounced as the modern Greek pronunciation \"<em>ef<\/em>\", not \"<em>eu<\/em>\" which is the pronunciation in classical Greek (from 5th &amp; 4th Century BC) which is older than Koine Greek.<br><strong>\u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03b9\u0301\u03b1 <\/strong>(deilia, G1167, <strong>timidity <\/strong>or cowardice, only once 2Ti 1:7, \u80c6\u602f), \u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03b9\u03b1\u0301\u03c9 (deiliao, G1168, afraid, only once John 14:27), \u03b4\u03b5\u03b9\u03bb\u03bf\u0301\u03c2 (deilos, G1169, fearful only thrice: Mat 8:26, Mar 4:40, Rev 21:8)<br><strong>\u03c6\u03bf\u0301\u03b2\u03bf\u03c2 <\/strong>(phobos, G5401, also \u03c6\u03bf\u0301\u03b2\u03b7\u03c4\u03c1\u03bf\u03bd phobetron, G5400, \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u0301\u03c9 phobeo G5439, \u03c6\u03bf\u03b2\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u0301\u03c2 phoberos G5398, <strong>mostly negative<\/strong>, but sometimes used as reverence: Eph 5:33)<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In Chinese<\/span><\/strong>, we have the two obvious ones in general:<br><strong>\u656c\u754f <\/strong>(<strong>good<\/strong>) vs. <strong>\u60e7\u6015<\/strong>(<strong>bad<\/strong>).
