Here are some classifications of chess openings.<\/p>\n

Open games are usually double king pawn games (1.e4 e5).
\nThe most common response is 2.Nf3 (King's Knight Opening).\u00a0 However, White can play:
\n2.a3 - Mengarini's Attack
\n2.Bb5 - Portuguese Opening
\n2.c3 - McCleod Opening
\n2.c4 - Whale Opening
\n2.Nc3 - Vienna Game
\n2.Bc4 - Bishop's Opening
\n2.Bd3 - Tortoise Opening
\n2.d3 - Clam Opening or Leonhardt Opening or Indian Opening
\n2.d4 - Center Game
\n2.Ne2 - Alapin's Opening
\n2.f3 - King's Head Opening
\n2.Qf3 - Napoleon Attack
\n2.f4 - King's Gambit
\n2.Qh5 - Parnham's Attack or Danvers Attack or Wayward Queen Opening<\/p>\n

Semi-Open games are 1.e4 without 1...e5
\nBlack can play:
\n1...a6 - St. George Defense or Birmingham Defense
\n1...a5 - Ware Defense
\n1...b6 - Owen's Defense
\n1...c5 - Sicilian Defense
\n1...c6 - Caro Kann Defense
\n1...Nc6 - Nimzovich Defense
\n1...d5 - Scandanavian or Center Counter Defense
\n1...d6 - Pirc (or Modern) Defense
\n1...e6 - French Defense
\n1...Nf6 - Alekhine's Defense
\n1...g6 - Modern (or Pirc) Defense
\n1...g5 - Basman Defense or Macho Grob
\n1...f5 - Fred Defense or From Reversed or Duras Defense
\n1...f6 - Barnes Defense
\n1...h5 - Pickering Defense
\n1...h6 - Carr Defense
\n1...Na6 - Lemming Defense
\n1...Nh6 - Adams or Hippoputumus or Wild Bull Defense<\/p>\n

Closed games are the Double Queen Pawn openings (1.d4 d5)
\nThe most common reply is 2.c4 (Queen's Gambit).\u00a0 Other moves are:
\n2.Nc3 - Chigorin or Veresov
\n2.e3 - Stonewall Attack
\n2.e4 - Blackmar-Diemer Gambit
\n2.Nf3 - Zukertort Variation
\n2.Bf4 - London System or Sarratt Attack
\n2.Bg5 - Bishop Attack or Zot or Levitsky Attack
\n2.f4 - Mason Attack
\n2.g4 - Zurich Gambit
\n2.Qd3 - Amazon Attack<\/p>\n

The Semi-Closed Game is 1.d4 without 1...d5.

Flank Openings are as follows:

\n1.b4 - Sokolsky or Polish or Orangutan Opening
\n1.c4 - English Opening

Irregular Openings are as follows:
\n1.a3 - Anderssen's Opening
\n1.Nh3 - Amar or Paris Opening
\n1.f3 - Barnes or Gedult's Opening
\n1.h3 - Clemenz Opening
\n1.h4 - Despres or Kadas Opening
\n1.Nc3 - Dunst Opening
\n1.Na3 - Durkin's Attack
\n1.g4 - Grob's Attack
\n1.d3 - Mieses Opening
\n1.c3 - Saragossa Opening
\n1.e3 - Van't Kruijs Opening
\n1.a4 - Ware or Meadow Hay or Crab Opening<\/p>\n

Tactical openings are usually gambits or sharp openings.<\/p>\n

Positional openings are usually closed openings.<\/p>\n

Don't play any opening you are not familiar with.\u00a0 Study an opening book or play lots of games with your favorite openings.\u00a0 Experiment with your openings after you have studied it a bit.\u00a0 Watch out for opening traps.
\nSome guy named Bill Wall wrote at least 20 books on chess traps with over
