I've come across a few of people who claim they like mathematics, but are actually cranks. Cranks are those who say funny things (but without kidding) like: Square of 2 is 4, therefore the Square of X is X + X.<\/p>\n
I supposed the funniest one is one from India years ago. Unfortunately I have forgotten his name or I would have included here. Met him during a dinner at Drexel University. A graduate student obtaining his Master's degree in Mathematics. We talked, I brought up the term 'conjecture' as something that's most challenging. He told me that they solve conjectures in India all the time, since High School.<\/p>\n
I would have told him to read a dictionary or asked him to solve the twin-prime conjecture. But I supposed a graduate student deserves his pride to some point.<\/p>\n
The only Indian mathematician I admire is Ramanujan. And I'm sure Ramanujan knew what a conjecture is.<\/p>\n
I supposed the next time I hear someone telling me that he or she likes math, I should probably test them first. <\/p>\n
