Book Review: A Portrait of Paul by Rob Ventura & Jeremy Walker

Chapter one talks about finding joy in ministry.

"Do not make it your job in life to provide scope for his greater sanctification. pg. 16" is a loud warning to many. I think it is well stated. Though, I wouldn't put it with the verse Heb 13:17. Because I believe the verse calls for a submissive heart, not a non-judgmental one, which I think putting these two statements together might imply. Do not make it our job in life for someone's sanctification is due to the fact that we are not third party observer and we rather play the role of pastor ourselves as example, when we think if we have any job of contributing to one's sanctification.

One thing obvious about the authors of the book is that they permit not female pastors. Not mentioned directly, but the use of "brothers", "he", etc. in reference to pastor at all times is plain.

Here are my highlights:
pg. 16
The more you love your people, the more their pains and grief will become yours.
More love...more pray, visit.
More love...more constrained to address sins.

pg. 17
There will be those persuaded that they are called to lead who show no inclination to serve.

The old paths, rest for the soul. Jeremiah 6:16

pg. 18
There is no crown without a cross...

1 Thessalonians 1:6 receive the word in much affliction. Can a pastor say this to the flock?

Psalms 139:23-24
Asking God to search my heart to bring out wicked way.

And words of Comfort and cause for joy from scripture:
2 Cor. 4:17-17
2 Tim. 2:12
Rom. 8:17
