Pope Benedict XVI stepping down. Many have commended such action, calling it an act of humility and that it should be done more often with advanced notice (6 years).
But why have a pope at all? That time will come, when Catholics start to ask that. A bit slow, they are. But it's okay. Though short, the grace period is there after all.
We need younger popes? We need God, wise men of God living in holiness, not younger generation for the new problems.
As for retirement, as I have pondered on this before, just as the priesthood is committed to someone for a lifetime, so retirement is just an excuse for the lazy and the unholy. One needs not think of work as laborious activities, but work is work, work is not no work, work is not vacation. Work is not self satisfaction; Work is that which glorifies God. Work is facing challenges one usually would be tempted to escape with an easy way out.
But then again, I do not mean the pope should not abdicate, since the Bible has never support such role.
