Interestingly the gene halorhodopsin, found in halobacteria, is responsible for light-activated chloride pump, aiding in energy production. Hence, the existence of the bacteria in salty environment.

When chloride ions are driven into neurons, they will lower the voltage and silence the neuron firing. This may lead to a better cure for out-of-control neuron firing diseases such as epilepsy and Parkinson's.
