Why Was Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games so Successful?

So after seeing how rich and famous actress Jennifer Lawrence has become, despite the fact that she's no more special than any average actors, I got a little time to do some brief digging.

The movie Hunger Games was probably what catapulted her into fame and wealth. So one has to ask, how did Hunger Games become so popular? I remember watching it into sleep. It's long & uninteresting. Soylent Green was a much better movie about Dystopia.

I came across Tim Challies' attempt to explain why. It's obvious he wasn't a fan, but his explanation sucks big time. He needs to get out more, experience the real struggle of the world, instead feeling comfortable preaching to the choir.

After a few more searches, I concluded that there's no answer to this in the online community.

But I have a theory why it is popular:

If a movie can do something tabooed in a subtle way, it will boost popularity. In this case, it's children killing children. That's what I think boosts the film and novel to the top of the chart. Who knows, maybe they will master the art of subtlety in child pornography, which are obviously attempted but failed in the box office. Not to mention bestiality. These subtle subjects have already gain millions of views on places like Youtube, so it's a matter of time. After all, it's about popularity and $$$.
