Ligonier Class: The Person and Work of Christ

Lesson 1
Kenotic Hymn Philippians 2:5-11
Some thought it as hymn due to its poetic form. But there is no evidence.

Lesson 2
Hymns/Songs/Canticles:
Magnificat by Mary (Luke 1:49-55)
Benedictus by Zechariah (Luke 1:68-79)
Nunc dimittis by Simeon (Luke 2:29-32)

    Lesson 3
Boy Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:41-52)
Noetic effects of sin introduced here. Only the boy Jesus has no such flaw. Adam was granted such blessing before his fall.

  2. timlyg says:

    Lesson 4
    Baptism (Matthew 3:13-17)
Mode of Baptism was not taught, but discussed.

Introduction to double imputation (Our sin to him, his righteousness to us): Active (lifestyle) & Passive (on the cross) Obedience of Christ. Sproul acknowledged an unsettling dissension on this doctrine among dispensationalists. They usually take on the issue of "His righteousness imputed to us", making them closer to the Roman Catholicism.

    Lesson 5
    Temptations of Christ (Luke 4:1-13)
Jesus and Adam compared in the temptations. All Jesus' responses are found in Deu. 6-8.
I will add that when some claim how it was easier to sin when one was in paradise, it is because we are thinking from a sinner's perspective. We treasure our selfishness, our autonomy from God.
I asked if Satan knew better when he tempted Jesus. None could answer to the point, but one came up with a very crucial verse, 1 John 2:16, a categorization of the temptations: sinful cravings (bread), lustful sight(shortcut kingdom) and pride(jump).

    Lesson 6
    Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-8)
Transfiguration (Jesus) and Book of Exodus (Moses) was compared. Light, cloud, etc.
Although the Gospel of John was the only one not mentioning the transfiguration, he was there and he mentioned the glory of the Lord (John 1:14).

    Lesson 7
    Triumphal Entrance (Mark 11:1-10)
2 Jewish Offices displayed: King & Prophet
Munus Triplex: 3 fold offices of Christ. 3 always act as mediators between God and men.
Prophet: For God to the people
Priest: For the people to God
ie. in liturgical churches when the combined priest/prophet role of pastor with back facing or preaching to the people.
Jacob prophesied: Sceptre shall not depart from Judah until Shiloh (the Messiah) come. (Gen 49:10)
Jesus was not just speaking the word of God, He is the word of God. Full authority.
Messianic Secret: "Tell no men", every time Jesus said that. Ended after His triumphal entrance.
    From Discussion forum:
Describe the relationship between the Word of God:
    1. Incarnate: directly
    2. Written: personally
    3. Preached: publicly

    Lesson 8
    Last Supper
    Matthew 26:26-30
Holy communion was taught. Views on the holy mass of the Roman Catholics, Luther, Calvin & others were studied.

    Christ's dual nature was mentioned
Luther's Communication of Attributes (Communicatio idiomatum[properties]): Refers to Christ's divine nature distributing its properties to His human nature - in reference to Christ's presence both in human and divine nature in the holy communion. This differs from Catholic's transubstantiation in that the elements of the mass are not transformed into Christ's body, an unnecessary miracle, but that His body (genus maiestaticum-human nature becomes majestic) is "in, within, under" the elements = Sacramental Union. Calvin's (as accused to be extra calvinisticum) believes that Christ's human nature remains in heaven and only His divine presence is at the mass. The others of course, is the famous symbolism which violates the importance of a sacrament.

There were debates on whether unleavened or leavened bread is to be used. The Eastern Orthodox used leavened bread (leaven symbolizes the presence of the Holy Spirit), while the Roman Catholics use unleavened. Some families have issues in churches on this. Someone from Puritanboard collected wisemen's saying on this topic.

    Lesson 9
    Crucifixion
    Mark 15:14-39; 2 Corinthians 5:21
Propitiation - Appeasing God. Act of Satisfaction.
Sanctum Sanctorum - Holy of Holies
OT sins not forgiven based on blood of animals (points to Christ), but of Christ.

Kinsman Redeemer: Lev 25:23-28, bride price/dowry for slave's wife (Exo 21:4-6). Jesus paid our bride price.
Hebrew slaves (Lev 25:39-43) and Canaanite slaves (Lev 25:44-46)
    Hebrew/Priestly Benediction: Numbers 6:24-26

Offense of the Cross: Concept from Galatians 5:11. It strips men of work and self credit.

God's will to crush Christ (Isa 53:10)

Both robbers insulted Christ. Mat 27:44
    Holy "Zombies" Matthew 27:52-53

Psa 22, an important account of the crucifixion.

1Cor 2:2, know nothing except Jesus Christ and Him Crucified.

  7. timlyg says:

    Lesson 10
    Resurrection
    Matthew 28:1-10
Jesus was passive of the resurrection. The power of the Holy Spirit raised Him from the dead, not by Himself. God raised him (Acts. 2:24)
However, 1Corinthians 15:20- Resurrection, as the work of Christ. v.26-27"For he hath put all things under his feet."
    OT stories of our resurrection:
    a. Daniel 12:2–3
    b. Isaiah 26:19
    c. Hosea 6:1–2
    d. Ezekiel 37:1–14
    e. Job 19:23–27

Interesting note: 2 Timothy 2:16-19 about Hymenaeus and Philetus, who said that resurrection is past already. Relating to Gnostic's matter = bad, spirit = good. Or one of the 2 preterisms: Full preterism. That they taught that believers' resurrection is a spiritual thing that has already happened after Christ's resurrection.

  8. timlyg says:

    Lesson 11
    Ascension
    Acts 1:6-11
Sursum corda: Lift up [your] hearts
Habemus ad Dominum: We lift them up unto the Lord

    Lesson 12 (Final lesson)
The Return: The blessed Hope ἐλπίς (elpis)
    1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:6
There is no secret rapture. No two kinds of advents. Christ will come in great glory.
