Mostly based on Stephen Tong's series.

I started taking this note taking seriously on this after the exposition on Deism:

On Hebrews 4:13, it's interesting to note that this verse refutes Deism most obviously in Chinese CUV: ...那与我们有关系的主...
KJV and NASB got it quite well as well: ...Him with whom we have to do.
But not as clearly in NKJV nor ESV: ...Him to whom we must give account.

Update 8/5/2025 Tues:

I've inserted some of STEMI TV Taiwan's Youtube clips on Hebrews in my Weekly Journal entries before, but realize that it's better to start referencing these video clips in their proper category, such as here. So starting somewhere in Hebrews 6, I'm posting these selected clips here. Some of these clips may be a rare find as they are only audio (apparently the video part is either censored, damaged, or somehow missing). The only hassle is WordPress doesn't allow Youtube link auto-embedding in its comments section. So I need to find the embedding script from youtube. A little extra work is fine. Although, pasting the youtube links will suffice and even better (less resource needed for loading embedded videos).

    v.1: "有人似乎是赶不上" Tong: 復興 (Revival) is not just about numbers, nor feelings, nor phenomenon, but it is emphatically a matter of speed!
    Hebrews 6:11-12 殷勤, 不懈怠
    But after you began, do not rush, do not do these 4 useless things in the world: anger 隨便發怒, anxious 着急, worry/hesitate(by Tong) 挂慮, fear 害怕 (these are the 4 byproduct of the Fall). However, if these 4 are lead by the Holy Spirit, then they are useful, i.e. holy fear, holy anger, anxious/concerned for those who are yet to be saved (2Co 11:29), etc.

    Common Grace vs. Saving (not special) grace:
    The unregenerated in churches receive such common grace, unlike the light that returns us to Father above, this light of the common grace is:
    - of Jesus' morality
    - of Jesus' holiness
    - of Jesus' kindness
    - of Jesus' righteousness
    - of Jesus' love
    - of Jesus' selfless salvation
    These non-Christians in churches do not understand what salvation has to do with them.
    Stephen Tong recommended Abraham Kuyper on Common Grace. On Logos, Kuyper has 3 volumes on Common Grace totaling $115. And its full digital connection (28 volumes) on Kuyper is $600. I just add this to my wish list. Not about to buy any of these just yet.

    v.4 Heavenly gift should not be cheap 不讓「天恩」廉價出售. I don't know what's this deal with Stephen Tong disliking 長征進行曲, unless we're talking about a different 長征進行曲 or that the song has a history I'm not aware of. A brief look at the music, if anything, it's just shallow. But I'm then curious as to how many shallow music Tong had to endure over these years.

    v.4-5: "...made partakers of the Holy Spirit..." does not mean being filled by the Holy Spirit (not Coca Cola) but witnessed the work of the Spirit in churches, etc.
    "...tasted the good word of God..." agreed that God's word is good, it helps people, but one is not affected by it or willing to be Christian because of it, merely an observer.

    Tong spoke of the connection of wrong baptism to Simony, which reminds me of Sola Media/White Horse Inn's view on testing the spirits and the forces of supernatural (even practiced by many famous scientists): control (knowing the right mantra/code) vs. true faith

    [I tried to verify this of Spurgeon online, but there's no record of such by Claude.ai. Closest suggestion of preachers with such integrity, other than Spurgeon, would be: John Chrysostom, John Wesley, George Whitefield (often preached without compensation), D.L. Moody]

    v. 7-8: How can the audience honor the message if the preacher himself do not uphold his own sermon? Basically this refers to those who are in the church but actually are not saved. Those who studied theology yet rejected God (Karl Marx, Charles Darwin, Friedrich Nietzsche, Soren Aabye Kierkegaard, Ludwing Feuerbach, George Friedrich Hegel) vs. those who didn't (John Calvin, the thief on the cross)

    v.9: This is an interesting verse as the English and the Chinese translation differs: "we are confident of better things concerning you...things that accompany salvation" (NKJV) vs. "我们虽是这样说,却深信你们的行为强过这些,而且近乎得救。" But if contrast with verse 1: "dead works", then it may be clearer as Stephen Tong pointed out:
    Biblical principle: 信心沒有行為是死的 (Faith without work is dead)
    So since you have this living WORK (v.9), it proves that you have a living FAITH!

    Tong on the 3 stages (at least) of salvation:
    1. Spiritual salvation (or positional 地位上的 salvation)
    2. Triumphant living
    3. Bodily deliverance (resurrection, glorification): 5 major changes: 1. corruptible becomes incorruptible, 2. of Earth to of Heaven, 3. Weak becomes strong, 4. Shameful becomes glorified, 5. temporal becomes everlasting. Ephesian 1:14 "Redemption" is not speaking of the day we were born again, but of our consummation of humanity when the Lord returns (The consummation day, the glorification day).
    So, verse 9, why 近乎得救? When we were born again, was our physical illness recovered immediately? No. Not yet. We are spiritually saved, but our Body is yet to be delivered.

    不配就不做 vs. 很配就一直做 which one is good? Both bad. But which one better? The second one, because at least they did it.
    I (Tong) rather choose to work with the hard worker who are full of pride than so humble/gentle that they are lazy; But most churches choose the latter one.
    A person doesn't do much wrong does not mean he is such a great man; he does nothing wrong because he does nothing!

    v.12: 如今長存的:信,望,愛 1Co 13:13. These 3 are in Hebrews 6: Love (Heb 6:10), Hope (Heb 6:11), Faith (Heb 6:12). Contrary to the beginning of the chapter, which points to a false believer, these later verses affirms these 3 properties of a true believer that false believers do not have: Out of his FAITH he has shown LOVE, he is a living person who by HOPE he holds onto the promises of God, and now he patiently wait for the fulfilment of the time with FAITH. These are later comprehensively revealed in chapter 11 (Faith), 12 (Hope), 13 (Love).

    Tong: The progression of Faith: God in his grace planted the seed of faith in us through His Word, we endure through God's providence in His Word, so this whole long journey is through His Word in His grace, with Jesus Christ as our source of this faith.
    The only possible foundation of our faith is God's revelation and promise. Because the promise is hidden in His Logos, and this promise creates hope in us. Promise is from Latin: Pro-Mittere (to send ahead). So God does not give someone a mission without a vision, inspiration, strength, etc. All promises are prior to the mission.
