This is an interesting interview by the Holy Post Media, between Skye Jethani and Historian Kristin Kobes Du Mez:
I have once pondered upon the idea of 撒娇 ("you pout if you don't get your way"). But this is finally my coming across on the same topic by American Christians. Believed to be a kind of frilly, pouting to get what you want-feminist, trad-wife-to-be, husband-pleasing, promoting-masculinity-in-men movement (which probably laid the foundation for today's anti-femininity feminist movement), which was what the Chinese version of "妳们女子要学撒娇", an exhortation by a Chinese wife of a pastor, I think, decades back, come from.
I believe this was prompted by the author's book: Live Laugh Love : The Secret History of White Christian Women and the World They Made, by Kobes Du Mez, Kristin.
This idea, according to Du Mez, is a sort of Prosperity Gospel ("Do this, and you'll get that": Be womanly, ladylike, and your husbands will love you; Obey God, and you shall be blessed with this). And this particular Western idea of 撒娇 [not necessarily only found in the East], is according to the author, originates from New Thought Movement, then Mormon author Helen Andelin's Fascinating Womanhood, and then in the famous 70s book by Andelin's student, Marabel Morgan (from Campus Crusade), titled "The Total Woman: How to make your marriage come alive!"
