Windows Server 2012 Standard Installation

It is rare that I would so quickly catch up with technology updates. While everyone is talking about Windows 8, I managed to get myself involved in updating GRIOT's server (From Windows Server 2000 to Windows Server 2012).

It was quite a process. At first I attempted the server core only installation, only to realize that GUI was what I would have wanted.

Then I spent too much time on researching how to migrate Active Directory's users/passwords from one server to another. It seems too much for me, not to mention Win Server 2k is quite incompatible with many recent versions of windows. So I recreated the AD manually. Good thing there weren't that many users.

Switching Domain Controllers was as easy as computer/server name changing and demoting/promoting DC. I also switched their static IPs. I also demoted Win server 2k so that it acts as regular workstation.

Had a little trouble with Password Complexity issue. It turns out I need to run "gpupdate" after I had changed Default Domain Policy, in order to overwrite the settings onto Local Policies. After which complexity is ready to go.

Then I had to turn on the Remote Desktop feature. I thought it has to do with the Remote Access Service, but it isn't. It was just like it used to, Computer->Properties/Change settings->Remote->Allow remote... and add the users that have the privilege (I also added these users to Administrator group, one by one, as per instructed). The one thing noted is the firewall: It should be checked that Remote Desktop is allowed under Public.

The last part was registering free online cloud storage with Microsoft's SkyDrive (7 GB) and Logmein's Cubby (5 GB). For some of D drive and C drive folders respectively. I had a little bumpy ride with SkyDrive because it doesn't have a function to add folders, I had to use a third party shell installation (right click on folder to sync feature) for this to work.
