Giving error 0x80072efe popup.
It is caused by a rootkit. Problem solved by using Kaspersky's freeware: tdss killer, which detected the rootkit and cured it. After a required reboot, everything else works.
This NYGC machine (STUDENT05) is one I just reinstalled Vista on. So, I am clueless as to how the PC was infected so quickly.
