When being asked if homosexuality is a sin today, I think it is wise to generally avoid it if a straight answer is expected, especially when the other side already knows your answer. Not because it is too controversial to talk about. But it is like when you are asked by a retard: "am I a retard?", you don't answer: Yes, you are.
