I address this issue in contrast to doing ALSO for the joy, pleasure in the Lord.
Although I would treat duty and support the same case here, "support" is essentially less valuable because it denotes pride and disregards holiness. But this is too broad for this topic.
Those who understood only duty and not pleasure are essentially in err in the following ways:
- It is not biblical (Westminster Catechism Q.1.): we are to enjoy God forever as well.
- It is legalistic: As long as I do it, I am better than those who didn't do.
- It leads to Uzzah's doctrine: Those who support shouldn't not be punished.
- It leads to jealousy: I did just as much, why he got more reward.
- It does not grow: The parable of 10 coins. I did what you asked, why am I at fault?
- It is a fake work: Those who truly love God would not walk in such counsel.
- It exhibits cowardice: I don't want to face anything more than my job description.
The list could go on, but i think I have listed all the major points.
