What about those who have not heard of the Gospel?

A common question, but the answers I've heard are mostly not to the point, useless. Such as at the last Friday's CCCNY Bible study. The pastor's reply was: We are not qualified to judge, it is God's decision, leave it to God.

Yes, we are not better or equal to God. But that's beside the point. The question, especially when asked by a non-Christian, rises from motive questioning God's fairness. So, the question was not answered.

This is a key to identify who has the burden to preach the Gospel. One who has such burden would not play the "Leave it to God" card so hastily. Because the key to answering the question lies in the understanding of sin. One must understand, even for the one who is answering, how serious sin has damaged the relationship between the sinner and God. How we as sinners, are enemies of God, all of us. Once that is understood, it is not likely that one would consider someone worse than a murder to be pardoned so easily. Then, we see the grace of God in full understanding.

Phil Robertson of the Duck Dynasty

When I first heard the news about how A&E put Duck Dynasty's reality show on hiatus due to his anti-gay remark on GQ magazine, I thought it is just like many other news that discriminate Christians for calling homosexuality a sin in public. When I saw Phil Robertson's attire, I thought him to be the Harley-Davidson motorbike rider gang member.

After reading his profile, I learned to respect him a little bit. Once a hippie of the 60s, Robertson involved himself with drug, sex, rock and roll, etc., until he hit rock bottom and came to Christ. Now he owns a very wealthy family owned business selling duck hunter products, particularly the "duck call" or Duck Commander, which is the company's name as well. The products are made from Louisiana woods.

He'd had issue with A&E before (2012) regarding them trying to ban him from using the name "Jesus" in his prayer as well as putting fake profanity bleeps.

If I have the time, I will take a look at the show. I think this fad will make for high rating for a while.

It is a curious thought, that of all Christians who are against homosexuality, a great number of some would prefer to keep quiet on the matter amidst non-believers while the others pay for the front line charge.

Ethnic Diversity in New York City

This calls for an interesting strategy for mission work in this city. This far, Redeemer's City to City is the only one that's close to such work. With Chinese immigrants (350k) so close to the majority Dominicans (380k), Mission target at the Chinese population is a crucial one, amidst very active Charismatic and cult evangelism.

Jefferson Bethke

A while back, there was a youtube video that went viral. It is Jeff Bethke's "I hate religion, but love Jesus". Kevin DeYoung attempted a seminary examination on Bethke's poem. Subsequently, he thought Bethke listened to him. Did Bethke do anything about his post though? hmm...

Other prominent Christians from Todd Friel to youtube subscribers, even Catholics, have discerned rightly of Bethke's misuse of terminology in a very straight forward way. That Bethke should have used "Legalism" instead of "Religion"...but I supposed that's too unpopular and boring for Bethke's video promotion.

My favorite response is, unfortunately, from an atheist. @ min 5:30, he has put it rightly by saying Bethke's "Religion" and "Jesus" notion is the same as a marketing scheme if Coca-Cola advertise: hate "Soda", but love "Coke". Aside from being an atheist with many profane language, I give him two thumbs up for rightly pointing out the problem.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Tim Keller aligns himself with Bethke or vice versa, which appears to be evident on youtube. My prayer now is on the atheist. There are people with sound mind that needs to submit to Christ.

Sunday Service

Yesterday's Advent celebration at Redeemer was excellent. Professional choir singing Christmas choruses with great clarity and dynamics. With only 21 singers, they could blast like a 200 chorister choir.

After lesson readings, some by children, Dr. Tim Keller gave the sermon. The foolish entrance of Christ our Savior is the ultimate wisdom of God. He brought in a good analogy of how had we plan for at least 2000 years of impact of our own teaching, our fame, our glory, we would never think of choosing a manger birth, avoiding politics, and finally going to the cross when success appears to be at hand.

Isaiah 11:1-10 already predicts the coming of the divine. For who can be both shoot (v. 1) and Root (v. 10) of Jesse, but Christ?

Why He left Malaysia

Not long ago, there was a viral article from Malaysia by someone trying to justify why he had to leave Malaysia for good. It is about the corruption and injustice treatment against certain foreign spouse of a Malaysian.

The responses, particularly from the non-Bumiputera/non-Malay community are on his side.

While I can respect his integrity for not resolving to bribery and being noble enough to fill out Borang-K to end his Malaysian citizenship when most people would rather secretly own more than one citizen certificates of different countries unless they get caught (but not Raven, the virtuous law-abiding professor, I'm sure), I have to say the whole story is not some testimony to be proudly declared.

First of all, there are others who have faced similar condition and survived in Malaysia. Are not their testimonies more valuable?

Secondly, every country has its own issues. I do not think U.K. is better than Malaysia when you compare more than just citizenship benefits. Some countries are just better at justifying their injustice, in ways that have fooled even themselves. U.K. does not become the 2nd highest debtor in the world by being noble, I'm sure, comparing its $10 trillion against Malaysia's $0.1 trillion debt, where U.K. is a smaller country by area.

So do we compromise unjust distribution of citizenship with indebtedness under the mask of luxury? As I said before, no countries are perfect, some are just better at making their problems less obvious to the public.

Ultimately, if one truly cares for one's own country's injustice, an active reaction is called for. Otherwise, it is called selfishness and the voice of a deserter on the matter is of no worth.

Then what about the Malaysians who agree with Raven? The phrase the enemy of my enemy comes to my mind, of course. The selfish ones think alike. I would join those who would only use Raven's testimony as far as to prove Malaysia's corruption. I would not use it to show how his decision has bettered his half french family, because that remains to be seen.

As a Christian, I see no biblical support in that kind of decision: Abraham, Naomi, Joseph, etc. only consider themselves sojourners in foreign lands. That means in the modern days, it is what you do that matters, not where you are. It is not the LEGAL selfish mentality that should be praised but the FOOLISH dependance of God's way that glorifies His righteous name that is to be sought for.

怨讟 (Numbers 21:7)

No one knew how to read the word "讟" at last Friday's Bible study. I doubt many still know.

怨讟 - yuan4 du2

Blame and hate.

Nick Santonastasso

Unlike the depressed turned pastor, Nick Vujicic, this Nick Santonastasso puts humor in his life. A better kind of Nick, when comparing their youth.
