Bak Zhang Lady in Chinatown

Bak Chang Bak Zhang! BaZhang! (肉粽/粽子)

There's this old lady that's always selling Bak Zhang in Chinatown NYC (NW corner of Grand st. & Chrystie st)

My first impression was dirty, probably not healthy. Someone selling food in a basket in the corner of the street, where the homeless sometimes linger.

Then, it turned to compassion.

Then I bought 2. Turns out she had more than 5 varieties (Taiwanese, Shanghai, 加料, etc.)

My wife loved it. Bak Zhang is her favorite. It has sentimental value for her because her both her mother and grandmother made it, from scratch.

Then I bought 3. And then 4. And will buy many more in days to come. They cost only $1.50 each. The Taiwanese type does not have salted egg yolk. And Nadia abhors (any? food from) Shanghainese.

I thought the old lady's very very old, that she's gonna be gone soon, until I took the photos with her:
