Exploring Churches in New Jersey

While still going to MeRF in Time Square, I have to check out the body of Christ in NJ since we've moved to South Amboy.

Thus far I've visited 2: New Durham Chapel (225 New Durham Rd, Piscataway Township, NJ 08854) & Mt. Carmel Orthdox Presbyterian Church (350 Franklin Blvd, Somerset, NJ 08873).

Though Mt. Carmel is listed under the OPC denomination, I'm not sure how closely it is practicing OPC's tenets. It's like a black church with a white pastor, with evangelical sermons leaning towards black/charismatic slightly. It is definitely unique in some sense, since this is an OPC and not a Baptist church which is a common black church custom. Traditional hymns.

As for New Durham, we went with Willy's friend Grace. Supposedly the church she goes to. I said supposedly because it appears that no one there knew her. Leaning towards Charismatic. Modern hymns.

The folks from either churches are very friendly and welcoming, that's for sure. They definitely follow the fundamental evangelical practice.

Next two churches I plan to visit will be RCCC (the famed Rutgers Chinese Mega church in NJ) and Ferry's church.

Olive Tree App sucks sometimes

Can't download one of the Commentaries (Preaching the Word - Exodus, by Phillip Ryken). Support gave me a few methods, none works but the last one: reinstall everything.

This is a huge waste of my time. I think the reinstall also messed up my Pebble (the redownloading of Bibles and studies flooded my Pebble watch despite disabling Bible Study App notification on Pebble App), which I had to reinstall. And I also realize that when my time is wasted by others' incompetence, I tend to procrastinate. Not good.

I need to be more disciplined.

Pebble Becomes Rebble

So Pebble is bought by Fitbit. The Kickstarter is done. The Pebble Time watch that my wife bought me is now officially UNsupported.

The good news is, there's Rebble.io. A volunteer-run substitution for Pebble. The site offers all the apps and watchfaces that were from the official site. Simply login to rebble.io and the site is featured with page that could automatically reconfigure your Pebble Watch/App to be hooked up with Rebble.IO resources instead of Pebble.com.

Thus far, the winning smartwatch with official support looks like Fitbit's Versa, which is close to $200. Of course, I'm not comparing this to Apple's or Samsung's smartwatches, which cost around $300-$400. I just need a simple watch that has some online features with long battery life and can be used for swimming. So I'm not quitting my Pebble Time just yet.

There may be some glitches, such as Pebble not able to download apps (displaying error message: Unsupported Apps/Watchfaces), the solution is simply reinstall the smartphone's Pebble App.

Update 8/14/2025 - Pebble is back apparently! Now, called Pebble time 2. My interest in it at this stage is purely in programming.

Update 11/14/2025 Pebble 2 and its story.

Standard of My Criticism

I take the wrong they believe to be correct, and destroy them. I would never do harm on them those wrong they believe to be wrong.

Today's Sermon: Psalm 90

Reflection:

Though always a warning against delay and unpreparedness, and regret can never be escaped, there is never a requirement nor last minute review/accountability for salvation.

Thus even in the last moment, one may pray for mercy and treat one's life a new beginning.

The Inadequacy of the Law

In the Thursday Bible Study about two weeks ago, we pondered upon the purpose of the law as we were studying Psalm 1.

I made reference to the fact that somewhere in Hebrews it is said that the law is inadequate, because it only reveals our sinfulness, like an X-Ray, recalling Pak Tong's lesson. The pastor did not connect and I forgot where in Hebrews it was.

Now that I can reflect and search, it is in Hebrews 7. Particularly verses 12, 18, 19, etc.

Of course, in Psalm 1, we are talking about more than just reciting and not breaking God's law, the meditation is relationship deep.

The Fake Evangelists for Muslims

Now in America, there are many claims of evangelism towards the Muslim nations and people. I've listened to the testimonies of these "wannabes" preachers of the Gospel to the Muslim community and have come to one conclusion: That their target was not really Muslim. It's easier or great to call them Muslims for them because preaching to the Muslims is well-known to be the toughest thing to do in the world, and who doesn't want to be known to accomplish a tough job.

However, their approach of "just to show love and friendship" is not going to cut it for the Muslims. They are ignorant of cultures and other religions.

The more believable ones are those testimonies of Muslim converts experiencing some vision of Christ, unfortunately to the Charismatics' liking.

So, the one key I use to determine if it's a cop out:
The foundation of Islam is built on the assumed failure of Judaism and Christianity. Failure to understand this will never result in preaching the Gospel to the Muslims. To a non-Muslim or fake/cultural Muslim, yes, but not to a Muslim, you are not preaching the Gospel to a true Muslim if you fail to understand the basic tenets of Islam, not to mention if you don't even understand Arabic when you call yourself a missionary to the Muslim nations.

Yes, I am trying to make a harsh criticism here, because there are those few who truly bring the Gospel to Muslims, and I will not allow a fool's testimony to tarnish their works.

Stephen Tong's Q&A: Do not rush someone to serve

From Songs 8:4 - ...that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, until he please.

... 不要惊动,不要叫醒我所亲爱的,等她自己情愿 .

I believe this can also be a good verse against the concept of "consumer Christian". Against those who like tho urge "Christians" to serve instead of just being a consumer.

Who's to blame in miscommunication?

Though word terminology and grammar are important, the burden of language does not lie solely on the speakers, because the listeners are not mere logical machines.
