Rabbi Ben Ezra

John MacArthur's John seriers study (part 2 of volume I) reminded me of something Rev. Tong prreached long time ago...about some Jews were praying to God to ask if Jesus was the Christ. I had not been able to find the source.

Perhaps it is the same as MacArthur's source. But then it is not quite some Jewish praying in a temple but a mere poem.

If this is the source, then it would have been very old. As Abraham ibn Ezra was from the medieval time (1092-1167).

And other than Robert Browning's poem on this Jewish scholar, there's no other reference on this subject:

By Robert Browning, Title: The Holy Cross Day

I

Fee, faw, fum! bubble and squeak!
Blessedest Thursday's the fat of the week.
Rumble and tumble, sleek and rough,
Stinking and savoury, smug and gruff,
Take the church-road, for the bell's due chime
Gives us the summons--'tis sermon-time!

II

Boh, here's Barnabas! Job, that's you?
Up stumps Solomon--bustling too?
Shame, man! greedy beyond your years
To handsel the bishop's shaving-shears?
Fair play's a jewel! Leave friends in the lurch? 10
Stand on a line ere you start for the church!

III

Higgledy piggledy, packed we lie,
Rats in a hamper, swine in a stye,
Wasps in a bottle, frogs in a sieve,
Worms in a carcase, fleas in a sleeve.
Hist! square shoulders, settle your thumbs
And buzz for the bishop--here he comes.

IV

Bow, wow, wow--a bone for the dog!
I liken his Grace to an acorned hog. 20
What, a boy at his side, with the bloom of a lass,
To help and handle my lord's hour-glass!
Didst ever behold so lithe a chine?
His cheek hath laps like a fresh-singed swine.

V

Aaron's asleep--shove hip to haunch,
Or somebody deal him a dig in the paunch!
Look at the purse with the tassel and knob
And the gown with the angel and thingumbob!
What's he at, quotha? reading his text!
Now you've his curtsey--and what comes next? 30

VI

See to our converts--you doomed black dozen--
No stealing away--nor cog nor cozen!
You five, that were thieves, deserve it fairly;
You seven, that were beggars, will live less sparely;
You took your turn and dipped in the hat,
Got fortune--and fortune gets you; mind that!

VII

Give your first groan--compunction's at work
And soft! from a Jew you mount to a Turk.
Lo, Micah,--the selfsame beard on chin
He was four times already converted in! 40
Here's a knife, clip quick--it's a sign of grace--
Or he ruins us all with his hanging-face.

VIII

Whom now is the bishop a-leering at?
I know a point where his text falls pat.
I'll tell him to-morrow, a word just now
Went to my heart and made me vow
I meddle no more with the worst of trades--
Let somebody else pay his serenades.

IX

Groan all together now, whee-hee-hee!
It's a-work, it's a-work, ah, woe is me! 50
It began, when a herd of us, picked and placed,
Were spurred through the Corso, stripped to the waist;
Jew brutes, with sweat and blood well spent
To usher in worthily Christian Lent.

X

It grew, when the hangman entered our bounds,
Yelled, pricked us out to his church like hounds:
It got to a pitch, when the hand indeed
Which gutted my purse would throttle my creed:
And it overflows when, to even the odd,
Men I helped to their sins help me to their God. 60

XI

But now, while the scapegoats leave our flock,
And the rest sit silent and count the clock,
Since forced to muse the appointed time
On these precious facts and truths sublime,
Let us fitly employ it, under our breath,
In saying Ben Ezra's Song of Death.

XII

For Rabbi Ben Ezra, the night he died,
Called sons and sons' sons to his side,
And spoke
, "This world has been harsh and strange;
Something is wrong: there needeth change. 70
But what, or where? at the last or first?
In one point only we sinned, at worst.

XIII

"The Lord will have mercy on Jacob yet,
And again in his border see Israel set.
When Judah beholds Jerusalem,
The stranger-seed shall be joined to them:
To Jacob's House shall the Gentiles cleave.
So the Prophet saith and his sons believe.

XIV

"Ay, the children of the chosen race
Shall carry and bring them to their place: 80
In the land of the Lord shall lead the same
Bondsmen and handmaids. Who shall blame,
When the slaves enslave, the oppressed ones o'er
The oppressor triumph for evermore?

XV

"God spoke, and gave us the word to keep,
Bade never fold the hands nor sleep
'Mid a faithless world, at watch and ward,
Till Christ at the end relieve our guard.
By His servant Moses the watch was set:
Though near upon cock-crow, we keep it yet. 90

XVI

"Thou! if thou wast He, who at mid-watch came,
By the starlight, naming a dubious name!
And if, too heavy with sleep--too rash
With fear--O Thou, if that martyr-gash
Fell on Thee coming to take thine own,
And we gave the Cross, when we owed the Throne--

XVII

"Thou art the Judge. We are bruised thus.
But, the Judgment over, join sides with us!
Thine too is the cause! and not more thine
Than ours, is the work of these dogs and swine, 100
Whose life laughs through and spits at their creed!
Who maintain Thee in word, and defy Thee in deed!

XVIII

"We withstood Christ then? Be mindful how
At least we withstand Barabbas now!
Was our outrage sore? But the worst we spared,
To have called these--Christians, had we dared!
Let defiance to them pay mistrust of Thee,
And Rome make amends for Calvary!

XIX

"By the torture, prolonged from age to age,
By the infamy, Israel's heritage, 110
By the Ghetto's plague, by the garb's disgrace,
By the badge of shame, by the felon's place,
By the branding-tool, the bloody whip,
And the summons to Christian fellowship,--

XX

"We boast our proof that at least the Jew
Would wrest Christ's name from the Devil's crew.
Thy face took never so deep a shade
But we fought them in it, God our aid!
A trophy to bear, as we march, thy band,
South, East, and on to the Pleasant Land!" 120

Psalms 5: When Evil thinks he prevail

Psalms 5, is a passage not about vengeance.

But about facing situations where wickedness appears to have gained victory. As if they were saying: "God is on their side".

Psa 5:4  For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee.

David cried for God's presence in his meditation upon such crisis. When one will surely fall either by vengeance or succumb to evil deeds.

David turned to God's mercy and instead of seeking revenge, he prayed for a walk in righteousness of God, in order to deal with his enemies, who are essentially those who rebelled against God.
Psa 5:8  Lead me, O LORD, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies...

Today, many miss this point. Because they use words like these to their defense against those they don't like, those not because they are rebelling against God, but simply because of their differences. Jealousy, imprudence, laziness, etc. are usually the cause of this, and thus their prayers are made void by their sins.

Because David take not vengeance, his resolution is to trust God. Psa 5:11  But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice...

He is not concerned about himself, but the whole community of the righteous. So while he talked of destruction to the enemies, those who walk God's true path, revealed under His mercy, is not only spared from being cast out, but granted the permission to shout for joy.

Such is a true preacher. A preacher who truly hates sins while preaching to sinners while standing in the house of God with reverence.

Flipit charger that uses occupied outlet in U.S.

Interesting product that's $15.99 on Amazon.

Very innovative, charing most mobile usb devices except for Ipad.

With its intermediate conducting device, it draws 1 amp for mobile usb charging from currently occupied outlet.

Since it's drawing out power this way, I supposed it cannot be used when the outlet is vacant.

A prove of a saved soul

Though the method can be questioned, I believe one cannot actually be living a true Christian life if one avoids or does not feel the need to preach the Gospel to non-believing friends when they have mingled for a good while.

Or enjoying the Word of God more than any other activities in a secular world. In other words, one wouldn't at one point felt so entertained because of the food or secular based events that one couldn't realize these are all less than the enjoyment of God.

There is no such thing as 'it is not time yet'; only an eager question 'how should I do it now'. While one may delay to seek a more opportune time, but the urge will always haunt oneself.

Alabama's toughest immigration law

Like Arizona, condemned by the President of these state laws interfering with federal law, Alabama's action resulted a more drastic consequence: The withdrawal of Hispanic students from schools, etc.

Of course, these aren't the only two states that's going crazy. I hope this jealous (I think it's because of jealousy) frenzy of the south doesn't spread too much into the north.

I've done my own indirect survey via USATODAY's comments where most commentators are filled with jealousy towards foreign immigrants because whoever's comments were on their side, they always get more scores while the opponents' comments get negative ratings. Sure they love to say..."it's illegal"...but when I played the devil's advocate and commented one time "The foreigners should stay out of United States' job fields, whether they are legal or illegal", I actually got quote a high rating of at least 6 points.

I'm not surprised.

Will there be another secession like the civil war? If so, I hope I'd be gone by then.

John MacArthur's stand on this, I would say is also rather negatively vague, as per his book "Right Thinking in a World gone wrong". It is good that he makes a stand on comply with local law, but as for being the salt and light of the world, he'd rather leave it to the government to decide, as if anything else would be considered a protest. If you care enough to ask God, you would be given the wisdom to do it rightly. Unless, like his formal school's past, Bob Jones University's once racial issue (refused black enrollment, prohibited interracial relationship), MacArthur, though I believe him to be racist, is over conscious of perhaps a majority of those around who are. If I were to guess, Had MacArthur lived before the Civil War, he might not say slavery is wrong as that would be a 'civil' matter and rebellious at that time especially in the South. This is my point. It is as if he could only preach to political/military congregation where there's no civil conflict with the already established law. Otherwise, instead of voicing differently, he'll probably disappear.

So I now see while MacArthur was still the bravest American preacher to stand on public TV, his voice is only as good as the current murky civil law allows. The U.S. would have to turn against Christianity at its core for me to wonder how he would actually react.

More importantly, my question would be have they really learned to be a light of the world that even outshines politics or  have they merely learned to be show others how civilized and biblical they can act.

As for these states' excuses in their 'methods', I can only reply:

You want to dispose those who are mostly of other ethnic groups while claiming you're not racists...good luck with that.

Kalām cosmological argument

Also known as the prove of God from First Cause. Prime mover term comes from Aristotle's primum movens.

Something apologist William Lane Craig is famous for. Why the use of Kalam word from Islam? Since Aristotle was the original contributor to this, which later followed by Averos (muslim), Maimonides (Jew), Thomas Aquinas (Christian).

Richard Dawkins Refuses Debate

I just want to note that I have not heard of this "William Lane Craig" apologist whom Dawkins is not going to debate with, unlike the pope, bishops, etc., Dawkins claimed Craig a mere debator as if it has nothing to do with the topic of talk.

Perhaps I could look up who this Craig is.
