Christotelic vs. Christocentric

christocentric_christotelic

Recently, Westminster Theological Seminary had to force teaching staff Doug Green to "retire" early due to controversy regarding interpretation of the Bible, particularly in the O.T.

The tools of hermeneutics in question are christotelic and christocentric. Green distinguished the two and supported christotelic over the other, especially in the OT. The risk of such view: it encourages the dispensationalism pertaining to a distinction between the house of Israel and the Church, something where a lot of Messianic Jews are mistaken.

Christotelic hermeneutics is the study of scripture, primarily the Old Testament, from the view point of the advent of Christ. Christotelic comes from: Christ, teleologically (goal, purpose, oriented). One could obviously relate to this when dealing with OT prophesies concerning the NT.

Christocentric hermeneutics view everything in scripture, even the Old Testament, as the concept and worship of the Son of God being present since the beginning. Christophany in the OT could easily justify this. In John 8, Jesus practically said that Abraham was a Christocentric worship, but the Jews were so into the distinction of their Mosiach-telic view that they had to kill Jesus for making such claim.

In conclusion, the controversy could have rooted from the emphasis of the authors vs. Author of the Book. Too much studying from the view points of the authors would direct one towards the progressive (Christotelic -> Christocentric) view. I see there is no need to worry about too much emphasis on The Author's view, since He is the ultimate author. The latter is preferred. For example: I noticed some seminary graduate sided with the Jews (or even Muslims) on the interpretation of "Us" in Genesis 1. Too much emphasis on the OT authors' point of view would persuade one to interpret the "Us" in the context of majestic plural (pluralis majestatis). This is why it is hard for the Jews or Muslims to accept the concept of Trinity. However, since the "Us" is spoken by God (Elohim) Himself, we must seek the meaning from the view point of God and not of Moses. In fact, even if we were to attempt to prioritize the OT author(s)' view in this case, we cannot hastily conclude that Moses understood the "Us" as majestic plural, instead of humbly taking the meaning as a mystery for due time. Therefore, though some Church Fathers could stomach the conversion from majestic plural to trinity, this faulty interpretation has become a stumbling block for too many. "Mystery->Trinity" is better than "majestic plural->Trinity", not the mention that "majestic plural" is rather materialistic instead of spiritual. We must prioritize God's view over the presumed authors' view in cases such as this.

The best summary from the linked article above is this:

There can be no objection to “Christotelic” in itself. But Scripture is Christotelic just because it is Christocentric. It is Christotelic only as it is Christocentric, and as it is that in every part, the Old Testament included. Or, as we may, in fact must put the issue here in its most ultimate consideration, Christ is the mediatorial Lord and Savior of redemptive history not only at its end but also from beginning to end. He is not only its omega but also its alpha, and he is and can be its omega only as he is its alpha.

On Homosexuality Debate: Against Homosexuality != Homophobic

After some interesting exchanges on FB, I would have added another defense against the point that homosexuality abhorrence has to be homophobic:

I abhor divorces, that does not necessary make me divorcee-phobic.

I abhor recreational boyfriend/girlfriend relationships: That does not make me recreational couple phobic.

It is also interesting that they attacked my view on homophilia & homophobia; but not xenophilia & xenophobia.

Good thing we ended the discussion rather peacefully when I suggested the real use of acceptance, which was a word that's been used to accuse me of being homophobic, is to accept each other's disagreement. (From "agree to disagree").

After some thoughts, I would conclude that one can only truly accept something when one fully grasp what that is. Even though I abhor homosexuality, I have no problem accepting homosexuals, because I understood why I am against homosexuality and thus my acceptance comes from love, understanding and honesty. However, if one does not know why or what one accepts something, simply because it seems nice, then one does not truly accept it or at most not being honest about one's acceptance, for the coming of understanding might sway one's acceptance.

Zacharias' sanctity of human sexuality is quite crucial in such debate.

On account of nature, I would call it faulty the statement "Some people are born homosexual" as much as "Some people are born heterosexual", so is "Some people are born antisexual, etc.". If this stand is agreed, one could evangelize by means of presuppositional apologetics.

I shall add:
To say that "one is born heterosexual or homosexual or anti-sexual or non-sexual or bi-sexual or ambi-sexual or etc." is by itself an erroneous statement and an excuse for certain agenda.
You are born with not those, but certain gender with their functions. It is wise to curb your desire wisely with respect to yourself, your family, your community and last but not least, the one who gives you all these.

A despicable kind of neutral ground which some calls cowardly, I would add "wicked" to it, is the kind that when confronting two opposing extremes, one accepts both views or does not want to say anything to show agreement or disagreement. This debate would hardly be that case, when I am confronting the exteremes homophilia vs. homopobhia, for I spoke up and offered a different solution to that without supporting either side.

Bible Reading of the Time (OT) 2 Samuel

Saul has died. Now David is ready to be king.

Chapter 1.
v.16 "I killed the LORD's anointed." Even though the Amalekite very likely did not phrase it as David did, the meaning is the same. There is no way the Amalekite was unaware of the God whom Israel serve which would make the king of Israel, the LORD's anointed. The spirit of relativism would love to argue against this notion, it knows not reason.

v.17 Lament attributed to only Saul and Jonathan, no other dead sons were included.

v.18 Book of Jashar/Jasher = Book of the upright. A poetic collection of Israel's heroic moments.

v.26 "...your love...more wonderful than that of women." David was not being homosexual, despite what the liberals would like to think otherwise.

Video Tapping Officers is Allowed

After the Malaysian incident where a woman tried to smash an elderly's car for hitting her car, which is everywhere on FB today, I now came across this: Where a guy is harassed in NYC by NYPD for recording police business from afar. The police also took his iphone and walked to him blocking his view and thus the smartphone camera war began.

It is interesting how these youtube, smartphone cameras and internet change how things get publicized these days. Violent has taken a new level of disguise.

May God have mercy on us all.

The City College CUNY Class: Math 20300 Calculus III

I've decided to take a test to past this one. Have been studying during the Summer.

10/04/2014 Update: I got cold feet. So I am taking the class instead. Changing the terms of the topic from Exemption Test to Class.

12/08/2014 Cheikhna Mahawa is the instructor. Very cool, funny one. A quick search showed that he was tortured back home for supporting education for the poor and had obtained asylum here in the States. His interest in teaching and the subject makes him a rare teacher. The only problem is there's no office hour and not enough time to discuss the subject more.

Textbook used: Essential Calculus Early Transcendentals 1st Ed. & 2nd Ed. by James Stewart.
