Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these, Ye have done it unto me

Many radical advocates (some hypocrites included) of charity and helping the "needy" (their own definition), often love to use the verse Matthew 25:40 to justify their cause and proudly raise their anthropocentric philosophy above everyone else's.

I would argue that doing so is a misapplication of the verse. For if they were right, then Jesus' prophecy of such (Matthew 25:30-46) would not be possible, for the righteous answer: Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? (verse 37)

Therefore, not to nullify good works just because the extremists used good works in their jealous and selfish causes, I would say this verse is far deeper than what the shallow-minded claim to understand.

Catholic's Stand on Preaching to the Jews

I remember reading the Wikipedia article on Jews for Jesus, a group of Jews from America targeting mainly other Jews of Judaism faith for conversion into Christianity.

The Catholic late Pope John Paul II had argued against preaching the Gospel to Jews, with the motive of having a good relationship with the Jewish communities.

Obviously, this argument was not out of the truth and peace, but peace alone.

I believe that such stand of the Catholics (not to mention other Christian groups) against preaching the Gospel to the Jews lies heavily upon their corrupted doctrine on soteriology, electing saints of the dead, misinterpreting the fine line between God's gracious sacrifice with works of men. Perhaps out of cowardice in Evangelism, for our Lord Jesus Christ, and a proud assumption that anyone who does otherwise is radical and beneath them (Catholics, etc.) in terms of "humility" and "open mindedness".

Brightest Supernova

It is know that SN 1006 (Lupus Constellation, southern hemisphere) is the bightest (-7.5 at peak) observed by naked eyes. Brigther than Venus (SN 1054 - formed Crab Nebula M1 also), seen for a few months during day time. Some would even claim one could read under its peak brightness at night. On Demon Possession

Since the "advancement" of psychology, some have concluded such occurrence is due to psychological disorder and has nothing to do with the supernatural.

Some would think that it's a supernatural occurrence prominent only in the ancient times.

I would say, this sort of supernatural occurrence happens in order to keep a body dead to the Gospel. What need is there for a demon to possess a body, if the whole body of a church is a much easier target?

Outlook Send/Receive Asking for Network Password

Appears to be a bug in Windows XP or Microsoft Office 2003.

I did two solutions at the same time. So I am uncertain which one actually did the job, if not both.

1. Regedit: Changed(not add) a key value at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
The value of key AppData was changed from %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming to %USERPROFILE%\Application Data

2. (I think this one actually did the job)
Removed Outlook email account and readded.

XAMPP

Finally installed XAMPP on my laptop so I could test PHP locally, offline. Have to do it, so I wouldn't have to wait for upload time while teaching Jeff at the library which seems to block all non-http protocols on its hotspot.

Doing a lot of delays these days. Need to keep myself up to speed, time ain't gonna be too merciful.

Astronomy Terms

Terminologies in Astronomy:

1. Apsides (Apogee, perigee), aphelion, perihelion
Apogee: Farthest part of orbit around Earth
Perigee: Closest part of orbit around Earth
aphelion, perihelion ~ around the Sun, farthest and closest respectively.
apocynthion, pericynthion for around the Moon, farthest and closest respectively.
There are also terms for other objects (Check Wikipedia) such as Mercury, Mars, stars, etc.

Wikipedia illustrations:

2. Conjunction: When two objects are close (within 6 degrees) as seen by viewer.
Inferior conjunction: When primary object is in front of the second (ie. the Sun)
Superior conjunction: When primary object is behind the second
Opposition: When primary is directly opposite to the second (ie. the Sun) from the viewer's point.

3. Greatest Elongation
Greatest eastern elongation: When inner planets (Mercury, Venus) are furthest away from the Sun as viewed from Earth, going into inferior conjunction with the Sun.
Greatest western elongation: When inner planets (Mercury, Venus) are furthest away from the Sun as viewed from Earth, going away from inferior conjunction with the Sun.

4. Eastern/Western Quadrature: For example, when the Moon and the Sun are 90 degree from Earth. Eastern quadrature is the time of first quarter of moon phase, western quadrature is the time of last quarter.

Wikipedia's illustration:

5. (Apparent) Retrograde Motion: When object's path does a little backward and forward (prograde) during opposition.

Wikipedia illustrations:

6. sub-lunar point, antipodal point: Tidal pull on the Moon's side, tidal rise on the opposite side, respectively. Tide at antipodal point is caused by the Moon pulling the Earth.

7. (Lunar) Libration: The reason we can see more than 50% of the Moon from Earth. Longitude due to eccentricity of lunar orbit; Latitude due to axial degree of lunar rotation. And diumal libration is when an observe observes from one side of Earth to another along Earth's rotation.

Earthsky illustration:

8. Lagrangian point (L-point, Lagrange Points): L1 (between Earth and the Sun), L2, L4, L3, L5 (plotted counter-clockwise from the right of Earth, if the Sun is on the Left).

Scientific American Illustration:

9. Occultation: When an object passing in front of another.
Transit: When the object is small
Eclipse: When the object is big

11/11/2009 Edit
10. Moon Phases: New moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, waning crescent.

Replacing keyboard on HP DV6000 laptop

I've replaced one's keyboard on an HP laptop last Saturday, thanks to this online instruction.

Basically, 5 screws in the battery side, two nearest to the back of the battery edges (back of laptop) and 1 in the memory compartment, need to be removed. Then the CAREFULLY pry away the top cover of the keyboard along its two frontal sides (left, right), carefully because there's fragile cable connected to the cover from beneath, same goes with the keyboard (remove by CAREFULLY sliding the keyboard towards the back of the laptop).

Perhaps Billy Graham's greatest regret

I've finally took the effort and found the picture taken in 1950, thanks to Corbis/Bettmann who owns the right. Added to my album.

The first time I read of President Truman rebuke was from an edition of Times magazine feature Billy Graham on the cover.

It is a good study, to see the repercussion of some great preachers' fault in public. I'm sure it played crucial impact to Graham's later attitude in faith and in the Lord's work be it good or bad consequences.

And then, to examine myself, less I be judged less by my Lord. That my righteousness exceeds such.

From wikipedia:

Truman wrote about Graham in his autobiography Plain Speaking:
But now we've got just this one evangelist, this Billy Graham, and
he's gone off the beam. He's...well, I hadn’t ought to say this, but
he’s one of those counterfeits I was telling you about. He claims he's a
friend of all the Presidents, but he was never a friend of mine when I
was President. I just don’t go for people like that. All he's interested
in is getting his name in the paper.

Instead of really repented of his action, regretting his 'counterfeit' as a sinner, he'd rather regretted as a victim:
The Truman story has often been repeated by Graham himself, usually to
justify his refusal to reveal the substance of his conversations with
other world leaders. (When Worlds Collide)

Micro-meteorites

Have I seen micro-meteorites before back in Malaysia?

I could recall finding small round stones almost everywhere, I remember I was amazed by them, but I never thought to test them out with magnets or the existence of micro-meteorites.

But then again, they were around 3 mm in diameter, not in the measurements of microns.
