William Carey

Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God. - Carey

Missionary to India. Though I cannot agree on the way he dealt with his wife and family, his achievement in India display God's mercy in His servant who loves the Lord.

I have learned from Carey of the politics for a missionary to bear: The art of tolerance in the face of political conflicts upon the mission. I shall then learn to excel myself in both patience as I draw the sword, that is, the doctrinal absolute of God. So that I may keep my eyes not by trifling matters of the fools and phonies, but on great things for the Lord.

The Foundation of Modern Judaism

Of the tannaim, first was Johanan ben Zakai, who used Hosea 6:6 to explain away their sacrement of sacrifice with prayer. Who escaped Jerusalem in a coffin to negotiate Jamnia with Vespasian. Then it was Akiva ben Joseph, an illiterate shepherd man who only began his academic pursuit at age 40, by which time, he already had great family and wealth. Whose well-known blunder was to support the Bar Kochba rebellion.

Work Habit

Yesterday, I was on time, from 11am to 4:45pm. I did my job, with patience. However, as expected, after spending his time interfering my work, trying to learn here and there himself, the client insinuated that my 5-hour work was too long and refused to pay full fee.

Now I have gained much experience to stay calm, so that conversation remained unheated.

It would appear I must not let this continue since it is not the first time that he had complained about time while he was the one who always loved to waste my time nonchalantly. So I made it clear that this time I'm not giving any offer or charity.

His partner in business, Oded, was also present. Oded would be the honest, righteous type, a complete opposite of Avi. Oded was silent. I supposed it is wise. So unlike Avi, I didn't try to get Oded involve.

Since he kept insisting on him being right, I was a bit enraged, so I tested him, that instead of his 20% "discount", I'd give him 50% cut, overruling any of his accusation that I was ripping him off, and that I would never show up at his place again. Immediately, he consented to my full fee.

Despite his tantrum, it is interesting to witness someone struggling against his own wickedness. As I left, he wanted me to bring his empty cups upstairs, could be nothing, could be his way of dealing with his weird sense of justice, I immediately concurred because I see no need to argue over a thing like that.

I had considered cutting this client off my list. If it hadn't been Oded as his partner, I mightn't need a second thought, thus missing the bigger picture. True, even Avi was not as bad as some of my old clients, viz. Hezi & Ronny...all of them Israelis. It is only through the grace of God, that I shall learn perseverance. I thank God for showing me Oded's character and also Nadia's testimony in her restaurant work.

Contradiction of Jimmy Carter

On prohibition of female pastors and submission of wives to husbands by the Southern Baptists, former president Jimmy Carter and his wife broke away from their denomination. Saying: "I
think there ought to be the ability for Baptists who have slightly
different commitments to Christianity to get along, work together and
love each other.
"

I find this rather funny that he said "...to get along..." yet he was the one who broke ties with the denomination.

Cultural Mandate & Gospel Mandate

To deal with the fanatic of the Great Commission-Only, the traditionals have sided with the likes of Karl Barth and Walter Rauschenbusch to promote social gospel.

Cultural Mandate has Gospel value, but it does not replace the Gospel Mandate. So it is never married to the great commission. Those who emphasize culture mandate, shouldn't forget that they need to stand in front of an unbeliever, testifying their faith, having their conviction challenged, laboring in giving birth to spiritual souls, instead of just dancing with 'prospective allies' and calling that the whole duty of 'preaching the gospel'.

I hope I'm not Kallinikos

Kallinikos of Heliopolis, Syrian chemist, who couldn't get his caliph to use his invention "Greek Fire", because the Syrians were winning the greeks, so he sold it to the enemy, the greeks...and the tide turned.

I have to admit I laughed for a while. But I hope I'm not as selfish as Kallinikos. In spite of the arrogance of America.

True Authority

Authority works hand in hand with justice. Therefore, it works hand in hand with integrity.

If those wonder why they gain no respect, in spite of their post and their demands, it is because of their injustice. Even the slightest injustice would ruin their whole authority.
