Westminster Theological Seminary (2014): Left Behind Series

On Dispensationalism

Left Behind Series was done in 2014 and a lot more recordings than I would like to place here. I'll focus on the ones that interest me, I've downloaded the recordings in my Library drive:

Left Behind? Why the Church Is the True Israel, and Will You Be Left Behind? by Peter Lillback

My Summary:

The Pre-tribulation rapture idea comes from the idea that Israel and the church are two distinct groups of God's people. Two distinct purposes of God.

Rapture: Tribulation is for Israel, not the church, so church has to be out of the way.

Premillennial's book: The Late Great Planet Earth by Hal Lindsey.

Covenant of Grace (Begins with Adam) < Abrahamic Covenant < Mosaic Covenant < Davidic Covenant < New Covenant

Law will be written in our heart (Jer 31) <Heb 8, Heb 10, 2Co 3. New Covenant Matthew 26, etc.

Dispensationalists: But Leviticus shows a different covenant with sacrifices and rituals. However:

Diversity and Unity of the Covenant, like seeds growing into different trees/fruits, but organically one in DNA. Covenantal Grace DNA: I will be your God, you will be my people.

Dispensationalists: So they are all different pieces.

Gen 3:15 Proto-Evangelion.

My note: Jews today replaces sacrifice with prayer, thanks to Yohanan ben Zakkai who popularized that idea, but such prayers have no Christ in it, so their prayer is one that mocks God - for why sacrifice if we could have just prayed already.

Scofield Reference Bible: OT people not saved by Grace but by keeping the Law. This was later edited out.

Therefore, without the distinction of Church and Israel, there is no dispensationalism.

The famous Blockbuster hit book: Left Behind, dramatized that unbelievers and Jews discovered the Gospel after the Church is taken out.

Dispensationalists: Prophecies must be fulfilled literally. But the symbols in biblical prophecies will ruin this idea. Pick and choose which is literal which is symbolic.

Therefore, the accusation of "replacement theology" by others against the Reformed is invalid, because it's election theology.

So Abraham's promises were not just for his seed, but the nations. A joining of Israel and gentiles.

That's why some dispensationalists would say circumcision of flesh will continue and sacrifices will continue in the Millennium, etc.

But in truth, two separate things become one, that's what grafted means.

Even Peter, the apostle to the Jews, got it right with 4 traits of the church in 1Peter 2:4-12, instead of making a distinction of church age vs. Israel.

Used to be a sign in the temple, in the Court of the Gentiles saying "if you are not a Jew, do not cross or be killed". Now no such boundary in Ephesians 2:11-22

Acts 15: Great Jerusalem Council= "First Presbyterian General Assembly"

Parousia = Presence of Christ with us when He returns.

Reformed Christians though maybe tempted, but don't pray for a pre-tribulational rapture, which other Christians love to pray for and thus against John 17:14, 16:33.

Proof of Christ's second coming after tribulation: Matthew 24:29-31.

*Unfortunately the recording got muted from @44:00-@44:50

We are left behind in the sense that we persevered. Blood of the martyr is the seed of the Church.

Lillback wondered that the revival maybe coming in U.S. as we faces lots of resistance.

The Time of Jacob's Trouble (Jer 30:6-7) = tribulation.

Lillback warned against kicking out brothers and sisters of Dispensationalists.

Lillback: I am pro Israel, but I'm not pro Israel no matter what. I am pro Jesus Christ no matter what.

Don't get theology from newspapers. Let scripture interpret scripture.

Part II:

Left Behind? Covenant vs. Dispensations by Peter Lillback

About a year ago, Peter Lillback gave a 45-min talk on the subject. Here is my summary:

 Reformed View Dispensationalists View
- Covenant (cutting - ברית)
- Dispensation (stewardship: Adam->Moses->---)Covenant is always same in substance (Pactum Salutis - Covenant of Redemption); Distinct in Administration (Dispensation).A covenant always contains works (obvious with Adam), grace and redemption.

OT kingdom rejected but not lost. Jesus' last 40-day class on Earth was about the Kingdom.

2 kingdoms from the 3 Gospels are essentially 1 and the same:
- Matthew is for Jews
- Mark / Luke are for Romans & Greeks respectively.Dispensationalists problem starts with translation from Hebrew culture to English culture: For example: Qere & Ketiv: Jews read YHWH as Adonai (Lord). English translators hence mixed YHWH with Adonai (vowels) resulting in YaHoWaH = Jehovah. Mixing the two to become one and the same.
So, "Kingdom of God" is not used much in Matthew; "Kingdom of Heaven" is never used in Mark/Luke. But they are the same Kingdom.

- Covenant is distinguished by eras. Rejects Pactum Salutis.

Key eras: Before (= Israel) & After NT (= church age).

Rejects covenants from Adam to before Jesus to contain grace.

All previous eras have failed the dispensational tests. After David, Israel was rejected, replaced by the Church under grace, which is to be raptured out, then, Israel will be restored.

Key support: 2 kingdoms interpretation from the 3 Gospels:
- Matthew: Kingdom of Heaven (Israel's)
- Mark / Luke: Kingdom of God (Gentile's)

2 Gravitations of Sunday Services Today

The crowd comes to a service either for:

  1. free concert
  2. free stand-up comedy

It is okay to have both. But they must not be the prime, which is the Gospel, which is lacking if one is not concerned with the two above, even if one lies about doing the Gospel.

OT Exposition: Psalm 4

v. 5-7 Thou has put gladness in my heart...

Trusting God is called into question. Pascal's Wager tested by Libertarians: But if God is not real, then we would have wasted our time devoting to a presumed God.

The answer is in v. 7. That in our trust and devotion, God put gladness in our hearts, that which is beyond worldly satisfaction. Devotion is not sacrifice for the worse, it is for the best. Thus, everything in our lives are enjoyed, how then, is it a waste?

Redeemer West Side Class: The Philip Series

Some 90+ turnout last night.

The videos and notes are out.

This is a series of quick expository study on the 5 O.T. books used for Jewish liturgical events.

  1. Ruth - Feast of Weeks
  2. Esther - Purim
  3. Ecclesiastes - Feast of Tabernacles
  4. Lamentations - Ninth of Ab
  5. Song of Solomon - Passover

The lecturer is Bijan Mirtolooi.

Two handouts: 1). ESV version of Ruth, 2). Mirtolooi's lecture notes.

The great turnout shows that even on a weekday (Thursday), there are great many of those who hunger for the word of God. Otherwise, one needs to wonder if a big church like Redeemer is big because attendees just follow wherever the crowds are, which is not untrue and I believe is still the case for many on a Sunday service.

First week, is the study on the book of Ruth. We went over all 4 chapters quickly.

The key words are:

-The kinsman-redeemer & levirate custom (Lev 25:25-30, 48-49) & (Deu 25:5-10)

-Hidden hand of God (providence)

-Hesed (loving kindness): multiple relationships between multiple characters in the book. Mirtolooi went through great length expounding this word.

Recommended book: Robert L. Hubbard Jr.'s The Book of Ruth.

-----------------

After the lecture of 1 hour, Q&A followed. I enjoyed it. One questioned about the validity of OT books today, Mirtolooi used the fact that Ruth is a defense for Davidic Kingship is proof that it was no fantasy - as most liberal commentators argued. The nature of Redeemer Q&A is to not provoke any "liberal" ideas, but "artfully" persuade them. I am on board with this, but not always - because I believe Christians can deal with aggressive liberals, which is not what the RPC method is equipped for.

Now back to the real stuff:

Great lecture and here are my notes:

Mirtolooi was open to the idea that female authorship is possible. I'm more inclined to Hubbard's "Samuel as the more likely author". (Book of Ruth, 1988, pg. 23 - wikipedia).

Canonicity: appears after Judges, but in Tanach, it appears after Proverbs - Since the last chapter of Proverbs pertains to virtuous women, thus following it, Ruth, is a good example.

It would seem hard to pin Naomi's family to a fault in the beginning. MacArthur in 1:20-21 noted that Naomi was though recognizing God's sovereignty, yet not HOPEFUL. I need to look further into the case of their migration to Moabite land. Mirtolooi did not explain pass affliction of God. There wasn't much indication of the cause of this affliction, unless you only accept the bright side of it - anything but Naomi's sins. Mirtolooi compared Naomi's suffering to C.S. Lewis' A Grief Observed.

Many commentators (e.g. F.B. Meyer, etc.) has stated that it was not a righteous decision to emigrate out of Israel, much less into Moab. Verses quoted are: Deu 23:3-6, Deu 7:3. Not surprisingly the Jews today would argue that foreign men but not foreign women were not permitted to mingle into Jewish heritage, to me this is like the kind of black is white, white is black argument.

The levirate custom is an interesting one.  Ruth did "uncover" Boaz's feet in 3:8, which bears resemblance  to Deu 25:9. Though, in Ruth case, hesed is obviously applied, making it more than a form of obligatory as Deu 25 demanded.

The ancient Chinese comparison to the levirate custom is 转房婚 = 夫兄弟婚 = 利未婚 or 收继婚 (any male relative from the husband's side except for sons of the widow's own birth). This custom is allowed and prohibited from dynasties to dynasties.

Boaz was a relative from Naomi's husband's side (2:1). A question was asked of this at the end (Who was Boaz to Naomi), I don't know why this wasn't the answer given.

It is important to note that Boaz was not the closest kinsman. There was another in Chapter 3-4, and Boaz justly dealt with it (detailed in chapter 4) before marrying Ruth. Like Driscoll, Mirtolooi said Ruth "proposed" to Boaz. Mirtolooi recognized that it was counter tradition. I am not inclined to this interpretation, since you cannot completely remove the levirate and kinsman-redeemer custom. Ruth and Naomi were fully aware and applying this custom on Boaz, in spite of hesed.

Question I would have asked: Ruth is read every year during Shavuot, the reason in the lecture: Love is the fulfilling of the law (Romans 13:10), is that also the Jew's reason?

Problems with Lithium Ion Batteries

With my Fujitsu Lifebook P1620, the battery that came with it is loosing charge capacity. It is discharging faster than I anticipate (about 1 hour of life only).

The solution has to do with a COMPLETE discharge of the battery and then fully recharge it for minimum 48 hours.

I have yet to try this, but there are other methods.

Ebay has an well organized methods to treat such batteries.

on Respecting other Faiths

The title: Respecting other faiths doesn't mean compromising your own, immediately made "Christian Today" my first guess, instead of "Christianity Today", as the more post-modernist view. Mark Woods' attempt to tolerate some of the customs of other religions shows the confusion he's had with the gospel. This is a common thing in Christendom today: They can talk the talk, but they cannot walk the talk.

My response to this is simple: If you give credit to the custom of false religion, unless you do not consider them falsehood (but why give credit then?), how are you to make the true Gospel known?

Are we to just go around showing disdain to other religious customs? Hence, the opposite of showing respect. Neither. And this is the fun part, because they who can't walk the talk would be lost at this point.

This reminds me of Emperor Kangxi who suddenly banned Christianity due to the ban of Chinese rites by the pope.

What then, is the solution? Wisdom. Wisdom out of prayer. Wisdom fools will never get.

Thomas Cole's The Voyage of Life

Painting on the four seasons of life/man.

Dr. Tong equates that with Kierkegaard's Aesthetic -> Ethical -> Religious stages.
