Scriptural Reading - 1 Samuel 1:3-11, 18-20; 2:8-10
Sermon series on David (The Man of Prayer) - On Hannah's prayer by Rev. David Bisgrove

v. 5, I contrasted on what Jacob did for Joseph to what Elkanah did (gave double portion) to Hannah.

v. 2:8-10: Known as the song of Hannah. The Jews made this a foundation of prayer. At v.10, "horn" is mentioned. I thought that it was an error like Moses' horns in Jerome's Latin translation in Exodus 34:29. But it would seem not be the case here. That horn is a symbol of strength.

This time Rev. Bisgrove did a great expository preaching.

Scriptural Reading - 1 Samuel 15:10-26
Sermon series on David (The Man of Prayer) - On Saul's Rejection by Dr. Timothy Keller

Theme: Self-deception.

Keller: Deut 7:7, is circular reasoning. God loved Israel because God loves Israel. This should be a good example to illustrate all arguments are circular at their foundations. A bridge to defend attack on Presuppositional Apologetics.

v. 24: Keller: Contrasting Saul's repentance with David's. Same words. But with Saul, "I was afraid of the men and so..." he has demonstrated that he did not grasp the meaning of repentance. Hence, self-deception. So, God rejected Saul, but not David, as king.

v. 11: I must meditate on Samuel's anger and cry to the Lord.

Jewish Calendar

Based on Rose Guide to the Tabernacle. There are ways to create pie/doughnut calendar charts on excel, etc., but I do not have the time now.

However, I believe that such pie chart is the best representation of the Jewish Calendar.

Nisan (Mar-Apr)    Iyar (Apr-May)    Sivan (May-Jun)    Tammuz (Jun-Jul)
Av (Jul-Aug)    Elul (Aug-Sep)    Tishri (Sep-Oct)    Heshvan (Oct-Nov)
Kislev (Nov-Dec)    Tevet (Dec-Jan)    Shevat (Jan-Feb)    Adar (Feb-Mar)

  • Nisan marks the Ecclesiastical New Year.
  • Tishri marks the Civil New Year.

I shall just list the festivals here:

Passover/Pesach
- Nisan 14

Feast of Unleavened Bread/Chag ha‐Matzah
- Nisan 15

How to Detect a Lie from those Who justify lying

It is one thing to lie, that when being found out, one feels embarrassed;

It is a whole different thing to lie, and whether being found out or not, emphasis on justifying the lie. This, I believe is what Jesus confronted the Jews "Your father is a liar and a murderer" (John 8:44). Because the Jews twisted (hence the lies, not the kind where they were trying to hide the truth, but the kind that they justify) God's words, and justify it, enforce it on others to follow.

Today, while coming back to the church from lunch to make directories at CCCNY with my wife, the longtime-staff of the 2nd Presbyterian Church, Peter, called me out at the entrance telling me that I should not keep the doors unlocked. I had asked him earlier the day when I found the doors UNLOCKED as I entered, that if he wanted the doors locked, to which he answered, NO.

Now, he tried to tell stories, apparently as a habit, that how strangers coming in to pray could post a risk or something. That's besides the point. So, I insisted, that I had asked him earlier. So, he said: Yea, you asked me if the door should be left open and I said NO! At this point, I have already lost respect for someone who either does not pay attention to what I said and twisted my words. My response to that was just simply, "I asked you, if I should LOCK the door." He immediately said, "AND I SAID YES!"

Voila, the lie detected!

This type of lie of course, is the worse kind. So after I followed up with "I always lock the door", I just ignore him, as he probably realized where he went wrong and attempted to justify it by saying: "Oh, it must be miscommunication then, I apologize." He just twisted the facts, as I have proven above, and he wanted to call this a miscommunication and not misheard? It was better to ignore and forgive him here, I believe, as a sign of mercy. The alternative would be to say: "Well, pay attention to what people say next time", which I have every right to say, but it might be too much for him to take.

John 8:39-59

v.39: Identity claim. The Jews claim their identity by who their father (Abraham) was. Jesus redefined their identity by who they are children of. Which is identified by what they do, not by their title.

During the discussion, there's an allusion to how Christians deal with a still sinful lifestyle. The general response even from the pastor were that all credits are from God's grace, not by work at all. So, when we sins, it just the way it is.

I would emphasize that though by grace alone all merits come, but there is a fruit to be seen.

There Must be Sensitivity of Words

Sometimes, to get a point across quickly, one often forgoes how others understand the terminology one uses. Or one could just simple be ignorant about the semantics.

A meaning, comes from words. Thus, correct terminology must be in agreement before any debate of meanings.

For example, when Tim Keller considered Yoga as a neutral activity (exercise for some, religion for others), one must define what Yoga means. Otherwise, I could just invent a sport called "Screwing" which is an exercise that requires a partner. But then, the still-conscious public today may say: Wait a minute, you cannot use the word screwing as it connotes obscenity. Why? Because words are as important as the meaning/motive/goal.

Words connect one to the integrity of one's lifestyle. We do not say, I will pay you back what I owe, but then never pay up thinking I am justified because I did not say when I will pay back.

Hence, after defining as clearly as possible what each words mean, even when a word inevitably has two or more meanings, I must responsibly apply it or reject it at the optimal level and not think I can play around with words and have myself justified in various ways.

If there is a schedule to be met, it must be clear and distinguished from an appointment that is assumed to be set in the end of eternity. If there is something in Yoga that is essentially a mere unique exercise, why not define it properly? Otherwise it would be an irresponsible take on the meaning of what Yoga is.

Pyramid TimeTrax EZ Issue

Lately, we've had problems twice with the TimeTrax recorder at work. It can still be pinged but the software (ver. 4.3.1) cannot reach it. Something about communication ports being not available.

I believe during the first time, I tried to reset the recorder, changing its IP, and perhaps restarting the server, in order to solve the solution. As with the second time (yesterday), I tried to solve it avoiding to restart the server, did not work. Since I didn't want to restart the server, it took me a long time to resolve it. I even called the customer support but they said it they don't support their software on the server. And if I were to upgrade or recover a lost copy, we need to pay $175 for the new version, which is supposed to have more net configuration feature.

Solution:

I noticed with netstat -a, a lot of UDP ports were listed. So, I thought it was the cause. A search online led me to find a way to close those ports: net stop dns, and, net start dns. Simply stopping the dns works already.

Other than that, I should look into what these latter commands really do.

Webmaster tricks: List all content of directory & Force plain text out of most executable files

The .htaccess file should be in the pertaining folder, with the following lines (first line is to list directory files, the rest forces most files to be read as plain text - For some reason php keeps executing nonetheless, hence I scripted such that all php files are converted from abc.php to abc_php):

Options +Indexes
<FilesMatch "(.+)$">
ForceType text/plain
</FilesMatch>

Vocab: Freebooting

Taking spoils from wars. Used also today for piracy of "intellectual" properties. I use quotes because although I believe in giving the proper credits to where they're due, I don't believe in such things as "intellectual" properties.

Memories from the Past Lessons:

With the right anger, the angels will clap their hands... ~ Dr. Tong in Seminary Course (2003-2004): Biblical Servitude (2004) - S04E11

Same Series: S07E12, Dr. Tong mentioned that Martin Luther scolded Calvin once. Which I have yet to find the source, but if it were true, it must have been done indirectly, since Luther never met Calvin in person according to recorded history.

"Academic is slave to conviction" - By Dr. Tong, at the Reformed Institute's Summer Seminary Course (2003-2004): Church Servitude (2004) - S01E03. Dr. Tong believes that Muslims were enslaved by such, therefore they value academic achievements to show Islam is right.

Same Series: S03E14 @4:00 min, Dr. Tong's critique on John Stainer's Crucifixion Oratorio. Error: That we should feel pity for Jesus' suffering on the cross. We have inevitably become the gracious instead.

Same Series: S10E02: Dr. Stephen Chan taught that the word "Spirit" in the verse: "...in Spirit and in Truth...", refers to the Holy Spirit. Not our spirits nor anything ours. I am still firm with this belief, despite objections from Rev. Lin or Tante Elder Lyna for recent Bible Study.
