First time at Redeemer Choir (Voices of Redeemer)

Last Sunday marked the first time for me and my wife to sing on stage at Hunter College together with the other volunteers.

The rehearsal a day earlier was delightful. Moving from CCCNY choir to this, is like a fish moving into water. Very professional, goal oriented, enthusiastic. I learned about the rule of parallel fourth and fifth.

I wish they have more. I may have mistaken to think Voices of Redeemer only happens once every season. There is supposed to be another performance in May, Mothers' Day. I may have spoken too soon to Micah about this.

It was a total of 45 people. Learned a few names, Arthur (a black guy who could possibly sing all 4 parts with great tones), Jason, Tony, Micah, Agnes, and "G", a Malaysian guy who was pleased to learn I am also from Malaysia. I wasn't sure if he switched his accent to Malaysian English and Chinese when he learned that of me.

There is a possibility that homosexuality is tolerated judging from the ways certain a couple of the guys were behaving. It's not clear but I think it is not necessary, judging from their male singing to behave effeminate. It makes me curious to look into the kind of side effect a father of this sort may have on his children, particularly, boys.

On the other hand, these two fellas' singing are superb. More than I.

American IT guy (webmaster) making living in Malaysia

I supposed Malaysia is more open to foreigners making a living in the country than developed countries such as U.S.A. & U.K.

Living on only $16k a year, John Hunter could live in a 3 bedroom apartment with swimming pool. Enjoying his economic lifestyle.

It's easy to be jealous of others, but if everyone is willing to face challenges and learn from each other, there is always benefits where there is no selfishness.

The article ended with plan to inquire about Hunter's income...

Vision of a Church

One of Redeemer's visions, is to plant as many "churches" in New York City & other cities around the world as possible. This, is her way of evangelizing. A little too hasty I believe, but a vision nonetheless.

CCCNY's vision? I do not know.

A "church" without a vision is not worth being a church at all.

A vision can be judged both good or bad. Any good of it, must come from God; Otherwise, it is not from God.

A vision is not necessarily and most likely not a sudden supernatural epiphany shown to a person in a symphony of lights and sound effects. It can be as simple as a God given heart to do worldly evangelism, provide Christian education to the poor, etc.

A good vision is that which can find no merit in man but God. To only or chiefly provide support to missionaries and theologians is not a good vision. It may very well not be a vision at all. Offering is the duty of all Christians. Giving is not a vision but a responsibility of all believers.

When Christians fellowship or work together, they must share the same vision, in all honesty, so that necessary compromise can be made. If the integrity of one's vision cannot be determined, it is not wise to work or associate with one.

There are those who believes they have visions but need no such things in their churches. They are disillusioned in what they call "fellowship of the Saints". They cannot work with others, because they want control and dictatorship over others and they feint humility as a trap to seduce their minions.

Thus, the importance of having and identifying a vision in a church.

America - A true Pharisee

In 1967, the political scientists Lloyd Free and Hadley Cantrill wrote that Americans were “ideological conservatives” but “operational liberals.”

Of course, I refer this basically to the mostly republican, Southern Bible-belters, Midwestern segregators, etc.

Fulton Street Revival

In his talk in Gospel Renewal episode, Dr. Tim Keller mentioned why the alter-calling type rally is perhaps outdated or not the only course of revival.

During the Center Church workshop series, Keller made the Fulton Street Revival (1857-1858) as a case for since revival is also done via merely public prayer, instead of preaching in public, there should be many forms of evangelical methods and that some forms are superseded by the other.

The last notion is what I would disagree. Mainly, because faith comes by hearing. I have not examined, but I am quite sure, such acceptance of revivals such as the Fulton Street as an alternative rally is to be blamed for certain heresies arising at this same age.

Christ's Dual Nature works hand in hand in His virgin birth

Today, the Janet Mefferd Show discussed on the reality Jesus' virgin birth.

With all kinds of information flying around the net, it is not surprising to see more and more so called Christians denying the virgin birth of Christ, while having no problem calling Christ their savior, their God. Some points to the fact that God went into the baby Jesus who wasn't God to begin with when He was born. But these are all ancient heresies.

So the question is why the talks about past issue?

I jump to the conclusion that this is due to something similar to that of Satan's reason to defect in Enoch's book or Milton's Paradise Lost.

The answer is pride of humility. Pride of being humble. Pride of being a servant. When a servant is this proud, he wants his Lord to be his Lord. He cannot stand his Lord to be same as him. He does not want his Lord to be eligible a status of his level. His servitude status should only be unique to himself.

Hence they must either view Christ as fully God or as fully human. Not both. For some to treat their divine Christ as human is to ask them stop hating their fellow human beings. For others, treating human Jesus as God is to ask them to admit some of their neighbors are better than them.

As a result for them, God either comes down directly and transform Himself to whatever type of Jesus He wants or not at all. Why going through all that virgin thing unless Jesus was just a man, not God.

And there is no need to explain why God has to possess a human baby at certain time just so this baby can be both God and human. It is simply illogical to have such premise. God does not need to be "promoted" from human state to God.

A way to tell attitude: replay in double speed

I find it very useful to play famous speakers' in twice the speed.

The Scripture says we must be quick to listen, slow to speak (James 1:19). While many speakers learned to speak slowly to prove clarity and calmness, they cannot truly hide their aggressive emotions. By double speeding their talks, I noticed certain anxiety in some voices which would be undetected by amateur like me had it been played at the normal speed.

Listening from Tim Keller to MacArthur to Mefferd, I could tell, though Mefferd learned a habit of speaking slowly, she is aggressively talkative; While the other two sounded calm and casual even at twice the speed played.

The Einstein Hoax

Lately there's been this fake story about how Einstein debated his professor on issues of faith, circulating around on Facebook.

I believe I had read different variations of the spam, all concluded with the student being identified as young Einstein.

Certainly, I need not discredit any Christian value in it. But the fact that the story is fictitious should cause alarm. It is alright to write fables and fictional novels and such, but it is wrong to claim an untrue as true.

This time the story goes with the challenge from the professor:

Professor: My brother died of cancer even though he prayed to GOD to heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill. But GOD didn’t. How is this GOD good then? Hmm?

Having gained some new perspective, I cannot ignore such hoax any longer.

Thus my analysis:

Hoaxes like these claiming Christian support are plentiful. Since they are hoax, therefore their "good" intention is bound to find flaws in the very intention itself.

First, it seems that the unknown author wishes to make the professor long-winded while the student gave simple answers, showing wisdom. But at the end, we can see it is unavoidable for the author to start preaching a lengthy sermon, through the mouth of the student, whose supposedly simplistic wise answers had drawn the attentions of many readers.

Secondly, even if the first was not the case, this very article went off topic with the conversation beginning with the professor defining a "good" God to the question of blind faith (trusting the professor's teaching?), hence the confusion exploded.

The fact that many Christians seem to love the article is because there are too many similar atheistic attacks on Christians and that many have no good defense against these attacks. So, I supposed this is a sort of punching dummy bag for them.

Thirdly, I can easily end the debate above by answering:

Yes, we would certainly love to help the sick. It is in our good nature instilled by God. But what I do not understand is, if your brother could pray to God, why did he only ask for a more worthy life? If he's cured of cancer? Is he not still going to die? What then, pray again? He could have asked for eternal life! Or perhaps he wasn't praying to an all powerful God.

Fourthly, if the debate does not end, I can guarantee a more fruitful followup discussion, instead of turning everything there is to know about God into blind faith.

Fifthly, since this article has plenty off topics, I shall just tackle the following one:

Q: Who created evil (viz. hatred, immorality, imperfection, etc.)?

A: Some creatures of God.

Q: Then God created evil! Since creatures are creation of God.

A: Nay, if that premise is valid, then we would be safe to say all criminals are criminals because their fathers want them to be criminals.
